When we saw the first trailers for Death Kiss, we were speechless. Charles Bronson is Alive! The star of the film Robert Bronzi Kovacs bears an astounding resemblance to the deceased star, albeit having a mini heart attack when I saw him on screen with a gun blasting bad guys.
Naturally, the first doubt that pops up is whether it is in good taste to impersonate a dead celebrity but after watching the final version, I would like to think that Death Kiss is in essence, a heartfelt salute to Bronson especially the Death Wish franchise.
From the trailers alone, one thing you can tell is that Death Kiss is not a well-funded film. So when it comes to large set pieces, don’t keep your hopes high. It is an indie film so go in with an open mind and just appreciate it for what it is.
Kovacs might not sound spot on Charles Bronson, but he definitely does have the aura. But again, if they decided to give him a Charles accent, that would have been extremely ridiculous and make them look like caricatures.
The story of Death Kiss is a simple tale about a vigilante, but watching the enigmatic K (Kersey?) murder criminals is rewarding. It also contains some very controversial concepts about self-justice instead of relying on police assistance.
I’m sure a lot of people are going to be upset by some of the comments DJ played by Daniel Baldwin makes, but personally, I liked how he was willing to heavily criticize contemporary society.
Richard Tyson (Kindergarten Cop) is the big bad of the movie and, surprisingly, is quite suitably overly theatrical, especially when he pours BBQ sauce over someone in order to bait some animals to come and eat him.
Eva Hamilton was very sympathetic as Ava and, to be fair, she acted much better than you would normally expect from such low budget stuff.
Rene Perez did everything from writing and directing to composing the music, which is pretty impressive. And I have to say I really liked the music, it was just a wonderful synth wave with an 80s feel to it.
It’s clear Perez was a fan of Charles Bronson and the Death Wish series because there are several easter eggs such as the scene where K wears the same hat Paul Kersey wore in Death Wish 2. You can always count on Death Wish to have a rape scene and while the one in this case is at least quite brief, it is still very disturbing. It’s simply something I hate watching.
I wouldn’t mind a sequel so long as a bigger budget is allocated that is certainly the largest criticism I read. Also, I wouldn’t say no to Sly bringing Kovacs into Expendables 4 even if it’s just a minor role.
In any case, Death Kiss is as bad as I thought it would be, and it is always entertaining to watch Robert Kovacz take out the trash. The budget didn’t quite meet the expectations, but it was a lot of fun so Bronson fans will appreciate it.
