Life just never seems to be pleasant for Haylie Duff. It seems dread is a common theme in her life. Duff has been put through the wringer with each new appreance on the Lifetime channel, such as getting married to a psycho doctor or being chloroformed by a normal college stalker. Glad to see that everything is still the same! With her recent appearance in Lifetime’s gaslight, it is obvious that the channel is continuing with the theme of tormenting the poor girl.

This time, Duff gets to play the role of a ‘victim’ as well as gets her hands dirty by portraying a victim circa 1944. The story revolves around a naive woman called Julia McNeil, who moves to Los Angeles with her boyfriend Shane only to suffer seeing hallucinations brought about by the trauma from the death of her parents.

Julias’s attempt to heal her trauma is best aided with the help of changing her environment, or so she believes. However, less than a month after Julia and Shane relocate into the house that was sold to them by Arthur, who happens to be a friend of Shane, Julia starts to exhibit severe paranoia. Julia believes to hear and see things that are inexplicable and to add onto it, Shane is unable to see them, further worsening her condition. An unknown man seems to stalk her at every corner. Not until Julia comes across his real estate office does she start believing that someone is watching her. The question remains, is this poor girl on the verge of insanity or is she onto something entirely sinister?

Let’s take a brief look into the Lifetime twitter community reacting to Deadly Delusion and we clearly see the movie being described as boring and worthless just like Ex-Wife Killer (#NeverForget). To my absolute shock and disbelief, it turned out to be thoroughly entertaining. Yes, the pacing of the plot definitely needed improvement, as for a significant amount of the second act involves a tedious dispute of ‘I am not insane!’ and ‘Yes, you are,’ between Julia and everyone else in her life. Even with the threads of the plot being loose, the film kept me on the edge with anticipating when Julia would finally wake up from her tormenting nightmare.

Haylie Duff is an important reason why Deadly Delusion is entertaining, even when it is in its more tedious moments, and speaking of Julia, she carries much of the film’s weight. Duff’s Julia is a particularly mournful and sympathetic character. You find yourself wishing you could reach into the screen and hold her and explain to her how everything will be fine. Through all the drama and the madness as Julia’s fears deepen and are more and more disregarded by Shane and everyone else, you feel her increasing frustration with everyone telling her that the dread she is going through is all in her mind. Because of this, by the end of the movie, you are on your feet, fully invested and cheering for Julia.
