The health supplement company warehouse ‘Raw’ comes into view and we catch sight of our three protagonists: bodybuilding star Chris Bumstead, entrepreneur Dom Iacovone, and coach Matt Jansen. Together, they have partnered to create the most delicious weight-lifting supplements known to man. This is the storyline of The Raw Story. The documentary, written and directed by Vlad Yudin aims to capture their rise to fame.
In 2022 when the film starts, we see Bumstead having won the Classic Build competition thrice and aiming for his fourth. To achieve this, he desires a tastier muscle supplement. Next on the scene is Iacovone, someone who has long wanted to start a supplement company. All he needed was the perfect brand ambassador. And to no one’s surprise, their collaboration worked quite smoothly. It’s still astonishing to learn that while Bumstead is accompanied by the face of the company, he comes into Raw’s headquarters every day to help build the products they advertise.
The Raw Story documents the highs and lows of the three men’s lives. Yudin wants to create a complete picture of all the three men. Therefore, we meet Jansen’s pupils who he is actively coaching. We meet all of the significant characters like Iacovone and Bumstead along with their spouses. It is a wonderful family snapshot in that these are industrious family men devoted to their work, their business, and their families.
Yudin has done exemplary work. As I imagine, it must help a great deal that he has addressed this material in Generation Iron. The filmmaker has dedicated himself for years to documenting the lives of bodybuilders. It is an especially insular sport since the goal is to achieve the beauty and strength that lies in the exceeding musculature of the athlete, flexed in as many poses as possible. No one should think this stuff is easy: developing these muscles and learning how to pose them is a long and gruelling process. And if you make like Bumstead and compete in a category like Classic Build, then you are striving to possess a physique that is sculpted from the Aristotelian ideal of a man.
Gentle reader, I know for a fact I would never be able to exercise this level of discipline or commitment. I had trouble figuring out what these men had to do to themselves to maintain these massive bodies. It’s astounding that anyone can manage to do this and win countless championship titles.
The Raw Story takes an in-depth look at A Sweet Taste of Triumph, a business venture that showcases excellent business success.
