CHOKEHOLD is the latest chilling Turkish addition to Netflix (original title: Boğa Boğa). This film surpasses major expectations as it is both entertaining and fulfilling. Even though the film is a bit lengthy at 1 hour and 52 minutes, the story makes up for it by being out of this world.
The film tackles the notion of betrayal and forgiveness, which makes it quite multifaceted. Furthermore, without revealing too much, a massive body count is witnessed by the audience, which surely helps with the pacing. Overall, it is a thrilling two hour ride.
Although the synopsis of the film in question might not be too riveting, it tackles a crucial topic. Chokehold is about a couple that leaves Istanbul and moves to an unknown village by the Aegean Sea with the intent to escape from modernity’s madness and build a new peaceful life. But to their surprise, it is a lot harder than anticipated.
As it is established in the beginning, there are some dark undertones when it comes to Chokehold. The settled village and unknown people are actually new for the main character but he has lived in Istanbul his whole life. When he is first introduced, the audience learns he is actually accused of a deep fraud that costs an unexplainable amount set by desperate people that wish to invest their savings. And to make it even worse, the majority of the new villagers know him and had trusted him.
They now run the same company they are suing for fraud while keeping average joe’s in insane debt. So yeah, they’re not his most ardent supporters. Not anymore! And most of them certainly go out of their way to tell him that.
More succinctly, Chokehold can also be put like this: A man strives to find serenity but transforms – again, without intentionally setting out to do so – into a serial killer. Now that is an ambitious career to have embarked on.
People like Yalin (Kivanc Tatlitug) don’t have much sympathy, and if them wanting to annihilate that fraudster themselves comes as a surprise, then Yalin has absolutely no problem standing his ground. So, when people confront him and threaten his peace and quite, he goes into attack mode.
In one of those rare instances when someone gets killed, the culprit is always a man. Self defense is usually considered a crime but in this circumstance, it’s justified. How they embrace life afterward shifts their world into one of chaos and eyes towards the horizon. He isn’t really that likeable and the more you get acquainted, the more distanced you feel. The guy has good intentions at heart, but not if it’s going to be an uphill task.
Netting the leading role in Chokehold is Kivanc Tatlitug as Yalin. Kivanc Tatlitug is most likely familiar to you from not only the Into the Night series, but also its spin-off Yakamoz S-245. He was the protagonist in that spin-off which is why he is able to shoulder a movie or series so well.
Onur Saylak is the director of Chokehold (org. title Boğa Boğa). For the most part Onur Saylak has been an actor, but since 2015, he has directed a short film and a feature film (now two with this latest one) as well as two TV series. His feature film debut as a director was the crime drama Daha in 2017.
He co-wrote his first film with Hakan Gunday who is now the screenwriter on Chokehold. Something worth noting is that he does have quite a few other interesting credits on his IMDb. Regrettably, nothing from that list is something I am personally familiar with.
If you feel like watching a dedicated protagonist’s downward spiral, then Chokehold available on Netflix should fit the bill. Chokehold is a movie that can only help you realise you are doing pretty well in your own life. In addition to that, I’d like to mention that the acting and the character of the film is superb. Let me put it this way, you will not waste your time in the movie!
