The plot makes this novel more entertaining than the previous ones. In this, Barrymore has very little to do which is true for Phyllis and Algy as well. The faithful Tenny is around as always, and for some reason, is even on a motorcycle. In this movie, he doesn’t care about anything and starts off in Switzerland ready to marry Phyllis, which is unusual for him. There is some train and airplane travel, a few explosions, and a bullwhip vs sword conflict which provides entertainment. The novel has some very interesting locations. In this, John Howard is tied to a murder and diamond theft in Switzerland while he is trying to track the heavies back to England.
One interesting aspect is how this novel was ahead of its time by adding artificial diamonds alongside corporate technology and conspiracies.
The planned nuptials of Captain Hugh “Bulldog” Drummond and Phyllis Slavering in her villa in Switzerland is once again interrupted by the murder of a Swiss officer on designated duty. The perpetrator escapes with a synthetic diamond, which was produced through a secretive technique devised by Professor Bernard Goodman, the father of their good friend Gwen Longworth. There is a simultaneous disappearance of another guest, the head of the Metropolitan Diamond Syndicate, Sir Raymond Blantyre, which raises suspicions in Drummond regarding his involvement in the theft since he would suffer the most damage if Professor Goodman goes ahead with publishing his claim. He abandons Phyllis and heads back to England.
Colonel Nielsen of Scotland Yard dismisses, as always, Drummond’s beliefs and argues that a person like Sir Raymond could not possibly commit such an act. An explosion that demolishes Goodman’s house and purportedly kills him only reinforces to Drummond the diamond king has once more resorted to murder to protect his business. He tracks Professor Botulin, whom he suspects of being Goodman’s murderer and who in turn, has been a bitter enemy of Goodman’s. His hunt takes him to a forlorn cottage on the outskirts of London where he encounters Goodman as a prisoner. Drummond’s servant Tennie joins them soon as captives, but brings with him the tools of escape. After Goodman is put away to somewhere safe, Drummond realizes he is with these crooks with no access to leave after Phyllis the woman looking for him was grabbed. He moves swiftly back to the house with Sir Raymond and his gun-wielding accomplices. Drummond sasses the situation and finds himself in constrained area where he tries to makes his egress, but is intercepted. From the angles of the new forces he meets, he knows he has dug a deeper hole for himself.
