Blink (2024)

Blink

This documentary that portrays a family on a world trek for a year could have been a cheerful but superficial travelogue, it could also have turned out to be an overly dramatic, emotional melodrama with heavy sobs all through the movie considering the lack of an easy ride for the family. Rather, in the opinion of Daniel Roher and Edmund Stinson, it was more appropriate to let the natural conflict of this trip slowly reveal itself within the familiar beats of life. Blink (2024)

They make a wishlist of all the wonderful places and activities they would be able to do if they traveled around the world, and after that, they travel all over the world in order to cross out as many on the list as possible. Some of these fantasies are basic, like I want to eat ice cream, while others such as go on a safari may be more daring, and others still such as making friends from different countries are rather simple. There is an undeniable sense of thrill in engaging in such a process, but it is also tinged with a sense of sadness.

There are many occasions when children are carried about at adult hip level, for example when crossing the mud of an Amazonian jungle or perhaps walking mountain trails in the Himalayas. Asking and Looking closely into the background, Taking what Edith and Sébastien the respective characters of the movie ask of the children, these children never let the adult expectations down, serving as a reminder for overprotective parents. However, cinematographer Jean Sebastien Francoeur also zooms out to take a more panoramic view of their travels, such as the blue red sky clouded with hot air balloons or the view of the sun setting over the horizon after the hot desert sands.

The Pelletier children, just like other siblings, squabble with some against others. Whining complaints lead them to claim boredom cold or fatigue or hunger, just like any other child in a family who is away on holiday.

In the case of young people, as with the children, they are more enthusiastic about playing soccer in the evening. However, with dusk approaching, their fear grows since it becomes more difficult to see, compelling a friendly knockout competition into a rather more daunting contest. This fear is even more intense during their visit to Ecuador where the Family gets suspended in a gondola in mid air for more than nine hours, an experience which is horrifying for anyone.

As part of the ideology behind the journey, the purpose is to teach these kids how to adapt to new places and make new friends irrespective of their disability, which we have witnessed over and over again in simply beautiful ways. A child named Colin cries when he is forced to say goodbye to a lovely dog named Bella when taking a family hike in Nepal which is quite powerful in its simplicity.

One of the worthwhile themes in Blink is constantly dealing with different poles and each idea supporting these changes is the same the people in their core are the same, regardless of changes. In the event that you are thinking how come this Family was able to take a one year leave while traversing around such extensive places, the answer to the question is quite simple and so Sébastien elaborates that during work for this company, he made money and earned from his shares when the business was sold.

In addition, they planned to live on $200 a day, meaning that they usually resided in hostels and with families which enabled them to become more engaged in the communities and meet local people.

It would have been good to have some background information about the parents before they set off on their quest as to what motivated them to take on such a challenge. But the way they relate with kids, and with each other in rare moments of honest stillness says so much about their ability to be resourceful, their heart.
