On September 6th, the world was treated to “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, an eagerly awaited sequel, and audiences have since been rushing to watch it. It’s already been said that film is the second big revenue earner for the month of September.

On Saturday, I went to watch the movie and to my amazement, it surpassed my expectations in terms of its entertainment value. Tim Burton directed the original one in 1988, and this one too. As a kid watching the first film, I found Micheal Keaton’s portrayal of Beetlejuice to be horrifying. Instead, this new film uses the creepy tone present in the afterlife and adds more to the sequel.

People came dressed as their favorite characters or even wore garments promoting the same fan clubs for the showing. As the movie started, it was apparent how excited the audience was as the theater was full with high excitement. The movie starts similar to its predecessor, with a theme song introducing and showcasing cast members against the backdrop of a little town. This kind of opening prepares you for the type of film that you are about to go see. There is creativity in the opening sequences that only Burton can raise eyebrows towards his new films, even those that have been with him for many decades.

The film has resonated with fans because it showcased the popular daughter-mother dynamic, this time with Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega. It is fascinating to watch a different relationship this time go through the kind of struggles the first film portrayed. What is also interesting about how this film came together is their approach to the main character’s identities by branching out in order to emphasize other parts of the narrative. The delias character that Catherine O’Hara plays, elaborates on her art and gives some remixes to some of the sculptures shown in the previous installment.

The public perceives sequels in a bad way nowadays mainly because of their poor views of the second sequel which always deviates from the plot of the first or just fails to live up to the expectations. After having watched the first part and loads of other sequels, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ is for sure a flick that is worth a watch and is quite different from the first part as well. The only reservation concerning the movie is that there are many plots in an hour and forty-four minutes. I thought the film would have been better if the ex-wife of Beetlejuice wasn’t included in the storyline. Not that it didn’t provide more insights into his story, it just seemed like it was out of the primary theme of the story. The main plot of the ex-wife’s revenge has been thought out well, but somehow the film requires more frames for its embodiment. Everything about the plot was good but some elements were not so critical compared to others.

Similarly, as in the first movie, the soundtrack added to important scenes and contained some witticisms. It also included great dancing and stunts, just like the preceding film. This encouraged the viewers to get involved in the plot and even experience the tension during the precarious moments of the characters.

I began to pay close attention to the events, anxiously waiting for another twist that I did not anticipate. The most significant one is emphasizing one of the second parts because then you start to remember things from the first part of the movie and in your mind the puzzle starts to fit together. At that point in the film, I do recall my mouth hanging open and scrutinizing everything that had come beforehand. Such films are few and far between, and this is why it was the scene that I found myself returning to. Some will notice it from a mile off, depending on the person, but the film makes an effort to incorporate some decent twists.

Upon watching the film, I still predictably have some criticism of the direction and acting in some of the newer media I have experienced. Not that it was perfect in the 80s or 90s, but some of the newer shows and movies are impressive and some are dreadful. This was not the case with the actors in this movie as every single one of them was great. I was so engrossed in the plot that I had not even considered the performance. The cinematography and the lighting for scenes set the mood and created the illusion that this could actually take place. I was glad that in addition to the wonderful and engaging story, there were also a couple of new supporting characters that managed to help move the story along. The lovable minor characters from the original, the shrunken-head guys, made a return and so did the fan’s favorite, Bob, who always steals the show. Although he didn’t have a lot of lines, he was, in my opinion, the most entertaining character in the whole film.

It is a joy to celebrate the success that this film has had, especially considering that the first movie was released 36 years ago. It is quite useful if you’d like to remind yourself of the beginning of the storyline or if you’d like to appreciate the older film all over again. And of course just like the first ‘Beetlejuice,’ I am sure that ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ will be one of those films that must be seen in theaters.
