The Asylum is a motion picture production company that is known for producing low-budget films. They have a strategy called ‘mockbusters’ where they create low-budget films that mimic the title of a well-known high-profile film in the hopes that the audience does not scrutinize the movie closely. Some of their well-known films include Snakes on a Train (2006), I Am Omega (2007), Transmorphers (2007), Allan Quatermain and the Temple of Skulls (2008), The 18 Year Old Virgin (2009), Paranormal Entity (2009), Battle of Los Angeles (2011), Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies (2012) and Age of the Hobbits (2012).
Battledogs happens to be another one of The Asylum’s regular monster movies. The film was directed by Alexander Yellen who mostly worked as a cinematographer in other Asylum and low-budget films but also served as second unit director and cameo during some of the shoots. Yellen has only directed one other film, a horror movie called Finders Keepers (2014), and some episodes of The Asylum TV series Z Nation (2014-8).
Like many of Asylum’s films, Battledogs is an archetype of B-grade monster movies and could surprise audiences. They are normally low quality and refuse to adhere to reasonable standards, but their flicks like Alien Abduction, Nazis at the Center of the Earth, and Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! are somewhat respectable.
The concept of using werewolves as weapons is rather novel, and the film attempts to do that justice with an intriguing premise. Werewolves are completely denounced and bulleted out. They emerge above the veil of controversial horror and romance storytelling phenomena however still borrow their premise from it. Werewolf isn’t even uttered at any point in the movie. The bites of the creature are spread more like a zombie infection turning 200+ people in the terminal affected in a matter of minutes. (We suggest you take a look at Werewolf Films for further insights on the subject).
Battledogs suffer from a problem that many movies from The Asylum studio have. The werewolf transformations done using the in-house crew’s digital software lack polish and look cheap. However, the scenes where the Air Force bombed New York City with fighter jets have better quality effects than the rest of the movie.
Unlike the average Asylum film, this one has a far better cast. There is Ariana Richards, who was the little girl in Jurassic Park (1993) and is now quitting acting to pursue painting full-time. Dennis Haysbert impressively plays the trope of the ‘out of control’ military officer. Kate Vernon appears as the scientist, and Ernie Hudson as the airport manager alongside Wes Studi as another soldier.
