Barbie & Kendra Crash Joe Bob’s Drive-In Jamboree, the fourteenth film in the series, delivers wonderfully odd characters and more peculiar comedy from the Full Moon franchise. Although Charles Band has directed every film in this series, this is Shane Bitterling’s first exposure to the legendary bimbos. Is this going to be a baseball hit, or is it the beginning of the end for the franchise?
Barbie (played by Cody Renee Cameron) and her friend Kendra (Robin Sydney) remain on the couch, as they always do. It is unusual for them to feel like they have no place to call home in the first place. Barbie envisioned a life with a husband to take care of her, but there hasn’t been one that impressed her yet. It all changes when Joe Bob Briggs (who plays himself in the film) appears in a commercial relaying details of his annual jamboree at the drive-in. Barbie and Kendra can’t wait to jump on their motorcycle and ride to Vegas right away.
Upon arriving at the jamboree, some fans become so enthralled with the performers that they leap onto Joe Bob. The friends listen to a voicemail that reveals Stu Dio’s (Felissa Rose) plan to demolish the drive-in entrance and construct a golf course instead. As this occurs, various clips of older foreign movies with uncreative American voices are spliced in as if they are making fun of those movies with Bad English Dub ads between scenes.
The only problem with Barbie & Kendra Crash Joe Bob’s Drive-In Jamboree is that it lasts only 50 minutes. There is hardly enough time to show how Barbie and Kendra are in the middle of a life crisis, to show the meaning of the jamboree to the “freaks” that came, to show the schemes of Stu Dio, and to solve the problems. Thus, it follows that something has to give. In this instance, it is everything about Stu Dio that has to go. Hers is a flawed plot; her first introduction to the audience is confusing, and in any event, she is defeated far too easily. Because of all this, there are no stakes here which is something the likes of Corona Zombies, Barbie & Kendra Save The Tiger King, and Barbie & Kendra Storm Area 51 all possessed.
On the other hand, this film is an absolute riot of laughter and already tops the franchise. Every scene provides comedy or laugh-out-loud moments. The Turkish Exorcist in the movie is blunt and definitely something that is very creative. Joe Bob’s dry wit has never been sharper, much to the delight of the weirdness of the characters he is describing. The idea of a film being presented within another film is equally entertaining. The funniest bits are the strangers who invade the car that Barbie and Kendra are watching and other outlandish events of the plot.
When it comes to acting, Cameron takes it to the next level and throws in some theatrics. Sydney continues to be her silly self yet exudes charm as always. The chemistry between the two is clear as Barbie and Kendra constantly come across as best friends and perhaps the only two people in the world who speak the same language. It is obvious that Briggs has some experience with entertaining low-budget b-movies and has a special relationship with Full Moon: he was married to Charles Band and Robin Sydney. Therefore, it’s not a great surprise the movie presenter knows this kind of product. As usual, he is charming, entertaining, and fun. Naturally, his able helper Darcy (in fact, Diana Prince) is with him and she is wonderful in the end. Though her part is too limited in terms of proper development, it is obvious that Rose is enjoying the role of a crazed, cartoonish dame very much.
The full title of the film is ‘Barbie & Kendra Crash Joe Bob’s Drive-In Jamboree’. This film is funny if not the funniest film among the releases of this particular franchise, but it has a few flaws as well. For example, one may note the absence of an intriguing story or conflict that can be resolved. But, on the other hand, Cameron and Sydney have never looked better as these characters and Briggs nicely integrate into the ensemble. To sum up, the film is entertaining and those who enjoy the more unorthodox and strange approaches to storytelling will find it delightful.
