Many of us recall when Donald Trump proclaimed his intention to run for the presidency of the USA. Just like me, I am sure many of you found the idea downright hilarious. A wishful fantasy that could never translate into reality, right? But then, the unimaginable took place. Trump won. With him winning each consecutive election, it was nothing short of scandal combined with him shooting himself in the foot, and a constant will to try to do it again, only for his scandals to become greater. While there are several conspiracy theories explaining how he got away with it, what if it’s the opposite? That reality? That President Trump had a bit of a hand and not a small amount. Who do you expect? Well, Satan himself, or as we know him, Luther.
“Bad President” attempts, through the lens of the devil, to recollect the process of Trump’s rise to the presidency, step by step. The movie starts with Luther, whom we know as the Devil, whining about the conditions of Earth. He, alongside his minions, thinks that Trump would make an amazing leader, not for America but for hell. The reaction on earth is quite the opposite of great, beat Trump’s attempt at a showcase. But the reaction is entertaining if nothing else.
If we talk about the most critical moments in the election race for Trump, there is a lot to cover. This film blends fiction and politics rather well. However, this man with his attitude is a walking joke. Somehow people actually voted for him. For those who can’t wrap their heads around how he ever became president, this movie gives a satirical explanation of it. Not too sure if it’s right, but definitely sets the stage for a funny film. Now sit back, grab your orange makeup, and allow yourself to completely check out because a show by Param Gill is about to start.
Let’s get to the point. It’s less of a movie and more of a Hit Piece on Trump supporters. As with any political satire, there are bits of comedy for Trump supporters as well, so don’t be offended. If you are however super sensitive, do yourself a favor and don’t watch ‘Bad President.‘ Now seeing that you are still reading, good for you. Jeff Rector’s Trump impersonation is laughable, but the worst part is his pathetic wig. Sadly, I’m not joking when I say it’s comical to watch. To make up for his lack of acting abilities, at least he can imitate properly. Seeing that is a treat.
What did you expect from Eddie Griffin? Of course, props also have to be given to him for playing Luther. Griffin kept my attention even through some of the more ridiculous scenes. The scenes where he and Rector were together are funny. But the real fun is spread throughout the rest of the cast, and there are quite a few of them. I can imagine a lot of laughter on set which translates into some real fun onscreen. It feels like everyone had fun working on this film.
Considering this is a low-budget production, I was pleasantly surprised at how well most of it worked. Occasionally, the sense of not having much cash available actually benefitted this film. It is a support for the claim that this is a satire, and should certainly not be taken all that seriously. I do not wish to suggest that every single joke landed where it was meant to land, or that each and every visual element came together – just that when the credits rolled, I seemed to have chuckled and chortled more than a few times. Which is what it is all about, isn’t it? That derisive laughter was inspired by unadulterated lunacy. If you think you are on that same track of thought as me, I would strongly recommend this film. Four stars and a thumbs up for all involved.
