Baby Boom” centers on an affluent woman, a yuppie, who one day gets the cutest toy ever. A baby daughter. At the start, she is not thrilled to engage with her new toy, but eventually she begins to adore it. In fact, it inspires her to get new ‘toys’ such as a farmhouse in Vermont, a baby food company, and even a handsome veterinarian.

The film could have been made as a satire, but the filmmakers are not too certain. They do find the yuppie very humorous, but they adore the baby too much, which makes this tender tale into a romance. And that’s just fine. It definitely is an adorable baby.

The part of the yuppie is portrayed by Diane Keaton, whose character in Annie Hall, more or less, created the category. She starts off the film as a severely competitive businessman who never takes no for an answer and is fully based in Manhattan. In the beginning, a narrator gives the audience some more context:

She earns a six-figure salary, owns a corner apartment in the right part of town, and has a devoted live in lover (Harold Ramis), who is ideal for her because he is a workaholic too.

Then, two of Keaton’s distant relatives perish in a car accident in Britain, leading him to inherit their treasured possession a baby girl, Elizabeth, who is portrayed by the twins Kristina and Michelle Kennedy. Keaton has no resources to take care of the baby after all, a partnership has just been waved in front of her. For a few days, she attempts to deal with the child by feeding her pasta and stowing her away at a restaurant cloakroom during business lunches. Eventually, she attempts to take the baby to an adoption center, but is unable to let go of this sweet girl.

This is where the film changes its tone. Until Keaton’s choice to keep the child, “Baby Boom” works perfectly as a satire. Even the dialogue between Keaton and the hat check lady serves as evidence to that she literally throws the squawking infant over the counter and says she’ll give “a big big tip”. But post the film’s turning point, the movie shifts from satire to an worry free fantasy. One of those where the bad is not too much and the good is just good enough.

The movie takes precaution not to challenge the character Keaton with anything portraying the real world’s chaos, for instance, poverty, sickness, and disasters. After she quits her job, she has plenty of money in the bank that allows her to purchase a country property in Vermont for herself and her baby Elizabeth. Furthermore, when the funds start running out, she launches a baby food company which becomes worth millions in just a couple of months.

Above all, she does meet some companionship there in the woods in the form of Sam Shepard, who is the local veterinarian and the only younger than 60 person living in the area.
