Until tonight, ARCTIC VOID was unheard of to me but when I found it on demand, I just had to give it a chance. A chilling mixture of scifi-thriller-horror-drama, such as Two Doors Down and Level 3 Productions, is something I wanted to check out for myself, especially to find out why it was released on January 14th of the new year. The premise of the movie hints to a reality that is both unknown and creepy and it certainly got under my skin. I was surprised to find that ARCTIC VOID was not heavy on science fiction as I had thought which is why the underlying storyline was strange and possibly even based on real events. It is directed by Michael Weaver with a story from Darren Mann and Paul Jones. ARCTIC VOID tells the tale of an enormous ship exploring Norway’s Arctic waters. A randomly collected group of world travelers, students, and some television crew make up the main characters who wish to enjoy the frosty beauties of the region. Without warning, each one of them goes missing with only their belongings left behind. The captain of the ship also goes missing without a trace. During the coast of Norrway, the crew decides to find the nearest village for help and begin their terrifying quest.
In just 6 days, Darren Man and his team finished filming ARCTIC VOID starring Michael Weaver, Tim Griffin, Justin Huen, Rune Temte, Sarah Alles, Laura Sophie Becker, and Ingrid Liavaag. The film is directed by Darren Man and ARCTIC VOID was edited by Grant Myers, while the cinematography was done by David Rush Morrison. Both Grant Myers and Michael Weaver have served as executive producers on this project. Although ARCTIC VOID is an indie film, it is evident that significant effort was brought into the polish of the final product. From what I can tell from the behind-the-scenes scenes that I have watched, there were no major slip-ups that would impede the film experience. Every cast member proved to be perfect for their role assigned and provided a performance that was required. There was certainly no lack of skill in this selection. Perhaps that is why the errors I was supposed to find simply did not bother me. Those locations were simply stunning. Great job to the scout and the manager of locations because that boat, mini bar included, the backdrop, and the dilapidated town that had a past. It was almost as if they came from the 90’s.
First things first, I have done some reading on conspiracy theories in my time which shall bring a context to why I enjoyed this movie. I understand how that does not further state what I have mentioned above – so let me elaborate. Rest assured, I can be remarkably skeptical about many things, but the concept of getting to the bottom of everything that exists beneath the surface – the things that people are scared to talk about – does bring out the journalist in me. Combining MK Ultra, The Philadelphia Experiment and The Worldwide Hum into one movie boosts the chances of its commercial success. You would expect so much to go on with a small cast, only two locations, and I must say it was still something I never wanted to fast-forward through. It’s like how I remember one other movie – The Chernobyl Diaries meets Annihilation. That aside, ARCTIC VOID is as bizarre as it sounds, and dramatic with gentle flavoring of suspense – with a sprinkle of man versus nature, all fictional – so I’m sure we know where this is painted from A. Knowing quite well that world leaders have us as substitutes, horror fans will not be able to forgive the concept. It is easy to see why they do not such as this one that is not made for 30 million bucks and void of jump scares, but ARCTIC VOID is more reliant on world building than anything else. If you can place yourself in the shoes of one of the television crew members, it is pretty messed up and fills you with dread and anxiety.
My only issue with the movie is that it has no conclusion. It was done so abruptly. Furthermore, there is one plot hole that I had expected to be resolved but was left hanging. You are made to expect an epic climax that never comes, much like The Blair Witch Project, and ARCTIC VOID also does the same. Which I assume, makes sense in reference to the story. ARCTIC VOID is currently available on rent, and all I can say is that it is infact void in a very terrifying aspect, but it can definitely be a horror flick with great appeal to some people. Be sure to look at the trailer to see if this is something that will deliver. In my case, it was certainly some great entertainment having seen it.
