Zoe Bell shot to fame in 2007 after appearing in the blockbuster ‘Death Proof’, where she demonstrated remarkable talent, her most memorable scene being the one where she dances on the bonnet of a sports car. Contrary to popular belief, this was not Bell’s first experience on screen. As ‘Grindhouse’ made its way to the theaters, Zoe Bell was regarded as one of the best stunt women in the business, working with famous actresses such as Lucy Lawless in Xena and Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Ever since her debut, Zoe Bell has been receiving diverse roles and achieving new levels of success. Earlier this year, Paul Ehteridge cast her in ‘Angel of Death’ where he wanted her to portray a lead character. While she delivered a brilliant performance and looked great on camera, the movie was a bit of a letdown conceptually.

Ever since Eve began working as a hired assassin, she managed to build a notorious reputation for doing her job well. She was effective and professional in her work, which is why she was always highly regarded in organized crime killings. Her current assignment, however, is proving to be an issue. She is forced to deal with a situation that she didn’t train for, which includes extra muscles at the scene and a kill that she is unable to perform. she is soon captures with a knife that is driven into her skull and blood of the innocent child covering her hands. While the doctor is able to extract the blade from her head, he is unable to heal the traumatizing effects that come from the injury. It does not take long for Eve figure out that the job she has is not something she enjoys. Most importantly there is someone who needs to pay for the young girl that he has killed.

It is pretty easy to get excited over “Angel of Death”. It has a stellar ensemble with actors such as Ted Raimi, Lucy Lawless, Doug Jones, and Bell herself. Let’s not kid ourselves. Zoe Bell is by now a proven ass kicking action star so it makes complete sense for her to lead an action crime thriller. It fits, plain and simple. In Bell’s case, she took care of her responsibilities and so did her co – stars; however, the movie is deficient in their writing, which is overly ambitious. Yes, this is definitely a case of overwhelming amount of style, yet a deficiency in substance.

This movie makes quite the effort to depend on various turns and twists to keep you guessing. As Eve delves deeper to uncover who the killer was, it shifts like quicksand from being a crime drama to something quite convoluted. There’s also the startling truth that instead of an expertly crafted roller coaster of hidden double crosses and identities, the movie turns out to be a bundle of loosely strung together fight sequences. While the fight scenes are well crafted and great, which “Angel of Death” does indeed deliver, it transforms into a haphazard as the viewer attempts to keep track of everything that is happening.

A plot of this type could work, but as I said, they concentrate on the style too much. While Bell excels at pummeling opponents and looking fabulous while doing it, she simply does not have the motivation to carry such a complicated plot like this one. Bell is believable, but she Mike Wills did not intensify the drama high enough for the audience to bite into the red herring they were fed. Her co-stars did not do much to help in this manner either, doing well enough to make the movie watchable but not doing enough to make the movie good. Unfortunately, the big names that are involved are underutilized, with the possible exception of Doug Jones. Lucy Lawless is present only to twirl around in some her underwear and little else. Ted Raimi’s tiny cameo lasts only seconds before he disappears. Both of these actors could have helped to shape this story a bit better and ramp up the excitement a touch, which is sadly missing here.

One highlight here is getting to see Doug Jones act without a stitch of latex on his person. The man is usually Drama’s most over-the-top monster as he spends the majority of his day suited in pounds of latex make up and rubber suits, but now, he is just himself. It is a nice touch as he does a good job in his role as a mob doctor and manages to make himself one of the few characters that you actually grow attached to in the movie. Doctor Doug Jones is in charge, and rest assured things are saner than weird and zany.

”Angel of Death” had the potential to be a knock out crime thriller but fell short. They used the fighting abilities of their leading lady Zoe Bell quite well, however the same amount of effort into the drama and story missing. All style, no filler, this movie manages to be a whole lot of mediocrity in a shiny package.
