The two lead stars of the movie Amish Affair Ryan McPartlin and Mackenzie Cardwell are said to be engaged in an affair in the movie. While it is primarily fiction, the plot is said to be inspired by a real incident of an Amish philandering Eli Weaver, who killed his wife in 2009 in order to be with his mistress. This film is the latest of Lifetime’s efforts to portray the topic of erotic Amish crimes in the form of a drama series.
Amish Affair: Stream It or Skip It? The Gist: Hannah Mackenzie Cardwell, a young girl is ex-communicated from her Amish community after the death of the Elder whom she was caring for. Stutzman’s Aaron hires Hannah to look after his sick wife Sarah and take care of the household and their children.
What is intriguing about the film is how it captures Aaron’s inner strife as he lures Hannah into leaving her family for him. It becomes clear fairly quickly that Aaron desperately wants a son. There seem to be no limits to what he is ready to do to fulfill this desire; even making Hannah’s affair with him an act of God. Torn in between her attraction to this devout man as well as the reputation of an entire community that disapproves of cheating, she seems to be in a fix. Hannah appears to struggle with Aaron’s proposal to quit and feels insulted by doing so. But things are quite different when pursued by a proper gentleman who goes by the name Jacob. Even rubbing on a knife is no stop for Aaron who wants to have three wives and kill off whoever stands in his way, even if that includes Jacob. Now that’s determination for you!
What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The whole “Amish man who has a mistress and is planning to kill his wife so he can be with her” plot is reminiscent of 2023 Lifetime true crime drama, Amish Stud: The Eli Weaver Story.
Grievous watching: It is Sebastian Greaves who deserves the most praise for the performance of Jacob because he devoted himself 100% to this performance, particularly during the peak where he performed a few Dance Dance Revolution moves right in the middle of broad daylight and nobody made a sound to notice. That was probably the highlight of the movie for me and therefore how can I not give Greaves some bonus points because of that?
Aaron, that was not exactly a comment that inspires optimism, was it? Ah well, there’s no reason to panic, it surely has to be the end of it and none of us expect him to take extreme, murderous steps! … Right?
Teenagers and Children: Well sex is certainly suggested but you never see anything worse than some brief flings PG-13 style so putting it rather mildly.
What Seekers Should Know: To be honest, I am not exactly sure what the Amish Affair wants to project. There are too many instances about the Amish community & the IC characters that live both in and outside the context, that it becomes quite difficult to understand the perspective or the concluding close. Do the audiences think that Hannah is a true heroine and is the conclusion that she meets one that they feel is justified? Almost everyone will I expect walk away from the episode, loathing Aaron out of guts and that he is undisputedly the villain.
The character of Hannah is evocative and ambiguous in her complexities to the extent that I did not know how to react to her and home was left wishing she had more practice. At one point, I thought she had it pretty rough, having been lured and abused by Aaron, one of the older members of the society, who also held the economic means of their society against her. At the same time, I found it difficult to cheer for her when she at times came off as being the one who initiated the extra-marital affair and when she did things like allow a sixteen-year-old to use her fake ID to purchase alcoholic drinks (seriously, girl, what were you thinking). I just wanted her so much to be strong enough so as not to succumb to Aaron’s excluding warmth, but I do appreciate how hard it is to be in the situation she was in and how conveniently he went into his advances to seize her.
The only time I saw butter churning as a means of seduction was in the movies. This time, however, it was unforgettable but somewhat awkward. Those and Jacob’s DDR and a strange obsession on ice cream (Hannah’s awkward moment marmite that is such an enduring presence you wonder if the flick is the work of a company selling vanilla ice cream) make one wonder whether the film has been made to ridicule the Amish.
