Sophisticated and Misunderstood, Albany Road features a cast composed of exceptional actors. Albany Road, which is set to be released in 2024, features Lynn Whitfield, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Grammy, Looks, as well as Tony and Drama Desk winner Renee Elise Goldsberry. Christine Swanson, an independent filmmaker who dispersed his kung fu movie to the public single-handedly, wrote and produced it. Albany Road was one of the movies written by her that won an audience award at the Austin Film Festival and further developed her skills. The director’s remarkable body of work, which includes “All About You”, “Rare Hues,” “Ezekiel Mob,” and “5th Ward” paved the way to achieve that goal. Her fans are eager to see her newest work fifteen years after her last A-movie. The road film, Albany Road, depicts the journey of two protagonists that head to destinations unknown. Christine’s objective with this picture is to connect with young, creative Americans. Creating changes in someone’s perceptions about topics such as race shouldn’t dictate our society.
Goldsberry portrays the character of Celeste who is a New York City executive on her way to Washington D.C. for what could be termed as the most critical business meeting of her life, where for once in her life she would be able to prove all the sacrifices made in this career transition are worth all the pain. Whitfield is cast as Paula, her ex-fiancé’s controlling and antagonistic mother who was influential to their breakup. J. Alphonse represents Kyle, the ex-fiancée and the son of Paula who seemed quite lost in his relationship but has now moved on awfully fast. Celeste, residing in New York City is faced with the worst snowstorm in the history of America while trying to present at Washington D.C. where I personally believe that it was due to the holidays that Paula, also present at DC went back to her family. And thus it started; the blizzards, missed flights and other factors with Celeste and Paula who cannot stand one another had no choice but to work together to reach D.C.
Albany Road beautifully explains a genre which is otherwise seldom associated with Black people, the Genre of Road Movies. The viewer also gets a glimpse into the lives of the middle-class Black East Coast and the struggles that hide behind the facade of success. Whitfield and Goldsberry get into their roles and tumble and toss around through the snowstorm as they are trying to resolve their issues. Nicholson’s Kyle is so realistic that one can never decide if they witness a helpless and heartbroken character or an arrogant selfish man-child. Still, with Lisa Arrindell as Carol, Joe Holt as Billy, Gary Dourdan as Phil, and Rachel Hicks as Morgan in one film, Albany Road earns an all-star cast with sincere performances that send out important messages without feeling ways too clumsy and forceful. Albany Road also enhances the Black culture and Normalizes the issues the Black people face.
Swanson works alongside her husband Michael Swanson, a studio executive, on the film through their production company Faith Filmworks. The couple opted to self-finance the film since they strongly believed in this film. Albany Road is a relatively low-budget independent work that is shot in Champaign, Illinois. Like most independent films, Albany Road has been touring the festival circuit and has won accolades at Ebertfest and most recently Best Feature at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (MVAAFF). Albany Road will be featured at the BronzeLens Film Festival in Atlanta on Saturday, the 24th of August, 2013 at 19:45 at the Tara Theater.
