Aftermath 2024

Aftermath-2024
Aftermath 2024

The film begins with Dr. Jane Dunning (Sally Kirkland, The Haunting of Hell Hole Mine, The Sting) making a sensational statement about a medical discovery only to stoically cut off and be replaced by Kate (Fruzsina Nagy, Land of the Brave, Opera of Cruelty) frantically shoving some articles into a suitcase and leaving the house in a hurry.

It is during the most suitable time that her manager, Robbie (Joseph Richmond, I Hear the Trees Whispering) decides to contact her and complain about the projects’ timelines. This gets her so angry that it causes her to drop her cup of coffee, as she is trying to reach for it, she loses focus on the road and collides with another vehicle. It could even have been a deadly collision because she is not in a medical center but in an enigmatic wooded area where she gets shot in the head by a figure wearing a gas mask.

Directors Gergő Elekes and József Gallai are known for co directing the features Moth and Bodom. They decided to turn their 2020 short into a feature and it is something different than what I was expecting from Gallai. While Aftermath does have many similarities to his other works with the frigid lifeless woods and derelict structures, the distinction is deeper.

In the first place, there is more of a sci-fi thriller aspect than his usual supernatural horror type of story. Aftermath has a very strong emotional aspect as well Kate is trying to figure out where and how she got into the situation she is in while also trying to remember her life before the accident and looking for answers, both remembered and forgotten, which become ever more crucial to the overall plot as the film progresses into its final act.

Aftermath is mostly Nagy’s show, she is present in almost every, and most of the time with no one to share her space with. She manages to improvise so well that she gets the audience to sympathize with her character. The only other actors to have more than a minute on the screen, Edward Apeagyei as Bubba and Péter Inoka (The Poltergeist Diaries, P.S.O: In the Name of My Father) as Kate’s husband, do well with their roles.

From a narrative perspective, it can be said that Aftermath is a well produced film. Nevertheless, it suffers from treating a particular subject matter that is now commonplace in various film genres and a sudden shift in style towards the third act. There are also some unresolved issues that are frustrating. Questions such as the identity of Eric Robert’s character and where his men came from. With a bit more clarity and better integration of the film’s elements, much could have been done to improve the finished copy.

Considering the track record of the filmmakers, Aftermath should appeal to fans of their previous films. The picture may also please those who favor nearby constructions, but the more mainstream audience may experience difficulties with the low-budget production style and repeated archetype.
