Now envision Napoleon Dynamite after 10 years, with an uplift on the geekiness, add a burning desire to air drum, a fanny pack, a headband, and you more or less have the protagonist of the nonsensical ”Adventures of Power.”
Ari Gold, the writer, director, and actor, is NOT the same person who entertained us in “Entourage”, as Piven portrays in his role of Ari Gold – a take-no-prisoners agent. But Grenier, the support actor from ‘Entourage’, who also features in this rarely funny sitcom, happens to be in the same band with Gold. Its is rather baffling how Gold convinced Michael McKean and Jane Lynch to work on this film. Surely, it wasn’t because of the script.
He plays the character Power who has been ‘on a break’ for the last 10 years. In the film, he is living with his hippie aunt, which he refers to as ‘a temporary situation’. Like the previously mentioned aunt (Lynch), Power’s father (McKean) also works in a copper plant. The Power family seems to be rather unlucky as it costs Power his job, just as his father spearheads the staff’s call for a massive strike against the wicked owner of the business.
The film depicts a cartoonish divide between those who have-and the ‘can-do’ have-nots. Mine owner Houston (Richard Fancy, who played a different type of boss in Seinfeld) is representing the rich baddies, and Rhinestone cowboy son Grenier. Grenier does an excellent mock of a foolish smug pretty boy, but unfortunately, like every performance, it’s one-note at best. McKean and Lynch get to barely strike a note within their understated characters.
From an inner air drummer, hatred is borne along with a devotion that is determined to wake the father Power is so determined to please. He goes on an odyssey from New Mexico to Newark where he meets a master (Steven Williams), joins his team and later on proceeds to fall in love with a deaf girl (Shoshannah Stern) and this is preceded by a competition event trying to get them to fall in love. Her mother(Annie Golden) is preacher that is sin wary.
Although ‘Power’ has moments of hilarity which stem from it’s camparision with sports movies which evoke feelings of hope, it lacks coherence as a whole. This is because it tries to blend social issues with mindless entertainment, which ultimately fails. Gold pushes the boundaries of air drumming by an incredulous amount, especially when bashing the workers in a particular sequence designed to satirize the spirit of oppressed workers.
The film is quite detailed with the aesthetics and does have a sense of style to it. The movie is located in picturesque areas which are off the beaten path to tourists. If you are planning on visiting New Mexico, I recommend Utah instead. There are some funny bits in the air drumming footage, yet, similarly to the remainder of this film, they rely heavily on some well-known songs (the theme song of the film is Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”). In my opinion, what made the mash up of features and oddness was the use of four editors.
