“When a Street Cat Named Bob Came to Town
This story is true and heartwarming, and frankly, I wish more people saw it because its execution was so great, performance-wise. A Street Cat Named Bob, set in London, recounts the life of James Bowen, a twenty something homeless heroin addict and street performer, played by Luke Treadaway. After being put into a drug rehabilitation program, he is offered a flat to live in and is at the stage of his life where he has to put the pieces together. He is frightfully awakened on his first night over, thinking that he is being burglarized, but instead finds a friendly, yet injured stray orange cat (played in most scenes by the real-life Bob). He tries to find Bob’s owner, but with no luck, and Bob returns to Mr. Bowen every time he tries to give Bob his freedom. Very quickly, Mr. Bowen and the cat are able to develop a strong bond.
Mr. Bowen sets out with a cat for a vet visit, and receives help from his fervid anti-drug neighbor Betty (Ruta Gedmintas), in dire need of assistance. Their bond blossoms as Mr. Bowen finally meets Bob, the cat who changes it all.
I won’t deny there are extreme bouts of emotions captured in the film; especially when Mr. Bowen’s character loses Bob due to multiple attempts to detox methadone. Managed by Mr. Treadaway, Bob’s beginnings as a foster cat, and the challenges Mr. Bowen’s character faces fuel him to keep chasing after this cat he feels so deeply intertwined with. You can’t help but root for this once reliant man, now a single father who tackles it all. With each scene, viewers become increasingly disheartened by the love overflowing between Mr. Bowen and Bob as their problems only continue to spiral out of control.
This movie left me feeling simply amazed, which is something that happens very rarely. And I believed their performances to be emotional and strong. If I had children, I would consider using this as a life lesson everything from “this is what could happen if you do drugs,” to the more positive, “this is what can happen if you believe in yourself and work hard.” And as a cat lover/owner, it is worth mentioning that Bob is rather a handsome little actor!
If you are an average human being, you know that positive news for the world is at an all-time low. This film might help with this deep weight. It might be just the thing to lift your spirits.
