In her new documentary, A Radical Act: Renee Montgomery, two-time WNBA champion Rene Montgomery details her path from small Sindy, West Virginia, to the pinnacle of ownership of Atlanta Dream, a women’s basketball franchise.

“I’ve been taken aback by the level of interest in the documentary. In particular, I will single out the most recent screening which took place at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival,’ Montgomery said in a statement to TheWrap. “It’s quite a journey, I must admit when many people tell the story and say that their lives have changed for the better because of it.”

The film, distributed by Roku Original, highlights Montgomery’s impressive career milestones such as her winning titles with the Minnesota Lynx, her transition into the WNBA’s executive offices, and rising to prominence in the league. The film is produced by Uninterrupted and P&G Studios and directed by Sandrine Orabona.

“At P&G Studios, it was exciting for us to work together with Uninterrupted once again in creating a meaningful message about women who are smashing glass ceilings and exploring white space to evoke P&G brands, and Renee’s story was a better fit for Mielle, Black founded & women-led beauty brand with official textured haircare partnership with the WNBA,” Eric Austin, Vice President Global Marketing Media Innovation at Procter & Gamble had to say.

Roku provides the following synopsis for the movie: “This new feature documentary takes a closer look at Renee and the circumstances that shaped her beginning from her roots in West Virginia, to winning a National Championship at the University of Connecticut, and going on to win two WNBA championships with the Minnesota Lynx. The documentary also focuses on Renee’s moving from athlete to the front office and illustrates how family and community helped process Renee’s integrity to become an innovator.”

“With several accomplishments in high school, college, and WNBA championships, not many athletes can boast about multiple achievements at such levels. Nevertheless, when Renee made history by being the first former WNBA player to have a minority ownership and an executive position within the league she became the true embodiment of what it meant to be more than an athlete,’ Uninterrupted added.”

“A Radical Act: Renee Montgomery” is a production of Uninterrupted along with Storyform, P&G Studios, and the WNBA. The executive producers include Montgomery, James, Carter, Austin, Jamal Henderson, Philip Byron, Stephanie Acevedo, and Kimberly Doebereiner. Camille Maratchi is the co-executive producer for the film.

“Atlanta is very important for Renee, for the movie. We wanted to make sure this city and its significance for the civil rights movement and the present-day Black Americans is also highlighted. This bridge and this overlook are quintessential Atlanta, they are part of the culture of Atlanta. So much so that the place was featured in quite a number of music videos and films over the last several decades,” Orabona said.

“We were shooting the tension-filled final act of the story. There was a moment when I watched the archival material that Rene and her wife Sirena Grace presented in 2020, Renee had right after she opted out organized a Juneteenth pop-up block party. I expected that it would be possible to edit the cut where the drumline is drummed to the same drummers and truly dramatize the many turbulent emotions that were ruffling Renee and Sirena as they were not cognizant of what the future had in store for them while still embedding in the film’s strong emphasis of Black Excellence that we had previously established in the Universal themes”, she proceeded.

“Renee’s pioneering spirit is not only limited to her activism and ownership.WR papers! Many thanks for the call. She is shattering records in the way that she approaches her sports commentary and the way she seems on screen. Considering the same basic idea here, the basketball that you can see here is the same basketball that that’s a kid, in financial terms, Renee tossed around in her driveway. It shows how her foundation, simply, sustains and guides her,” Orabona so finished.
