A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)

A Quiet Place is a masterpiece. John Krasinski’s first escapade behind the camera can easily be regarded as one of the most nerve racking pieces of cinema history. The film’s greatest hook if you make a sound, monsters that will come and slaughter you allow for one of the most stressful and also one of the most horrific experiences in film history. And as if that were not enough, the portrayal of family drama makes the film more terrifying and touching at the same time. And at a young, brisk 90-minute runtime, it constantly takes you on the edge leaving you restless throughout.

On one hand, it is so literally out of the question. There can never be a sequel that ever surpasses what the project of the first film entails. The audacity can only be stretched to a certain verge. The first film gets so many things right. The entire family going through loss and agony. The sight of a pregnancy gets more scary than excited. a baby who cannot even control its cries. Yes, a bundle of joy but in this situation, like a time bomb. When I wrote my first review I remember saying the whole film resembles the great velociraptor scene with kids in Jurassic Park.

The Quiet Place 2 movie was quite surprising for me. No, it didn’t come close to the first movie, but we still got some quality reflux bonding which continued the story of the half abandoned family and the plot of the franchise seems to gracefully evolve to a new level as we get to meet new tribes, character, and get some new monster lore. In the first part, we learned that they were sensitive to sound in the sequel water seems to be another their Achilles heel (which reminded me of signs).

The only sight that captured my attention in A Quiet Place: Day One was the nests of the monsters, Likewise the movie’s premise hinted at the alien’s habitation which confined my anticipation but it was adequate. I recline to the opinion that these films should be with limited scope and urgency to how these monsters came to be. Because sometimes, it’s all too much to offer. Take, The Force from Star Wars for example. Midichlorians ruined everything and turned the Jedi from an epic folklore legend into an office worker with limited creativity.

On the other hand, Day One chooses to tell a simple but meaningful story. It deliberately follows in the footsteps of its predecessors and introduces us to new characters (and one courageous cat) we’re fond of and want to see survive. As we have seen from how the previous film ended none of these people are exempt. There is no such thing as plot armor for them. There is no security; anyone can be shot down in a matter of moments even the young.

In Day One, Sammy (Lupita Nyong’o) is being introduced. She has cancer and is bedridden. Bitter about her situation, she cannot comprehend how she has become someone stuck in hospice care and withering away. I’m mean, she informs her nurse, Reuben, played by Alex Wolff. She may not enjoy being around people but she does love pizza, and that’s the only reason she goes with a few other patients on an excursion. She considers NYC pizza to be the Holy Grail of food. Later in the film, we understand her eagerness better.

The weather in the city is already bad and the city girls do not want to go there. Just as Sam runs into Henry whom we met in Part II the aliens attack during a charismatically unsettling marionette performance. The world goes berserk, and a frantic flight through a city devastated within hours begins.

Then she encounters Eric (Joseph Quinn), and here the two hit the town for pizza and delve into Sammy’s tragic history. This is an unexpectedly poignant film there is much regard for calmness before the unwelcome circumstances. From start to finish Nyong’o is terrific, and that makes me nostalgic for how terrific she was in Us and how infrequently I have seen her in recent years.

Quinn, whom you probably remember from the most recent season of Stranger Things when he had an American accent and short 80s hard rock chain is equally dramatizing as well how so few words could carry so much anguish and depth. The film attains real vigor when these two paired with Sam’s cat Frodo present a valiant team.

Day One successfully combines a heartfelt tale of camaraderie set in apocalyptic times with a scary and simple tale that has just the right number of jump scares to keep you on your toes. Like the first two pictures, this one is also not too long, its duration being 1 hour and 40 minutes. Even though I usually complain as to how most films released nowadays run about 20 to 30 minutes too long or even more, I don’t think I am the only person who would understand how in this particular case, the directors could have easily added another half an hour of sequences of the same action over and over again doing nothing but prolonging the runtime. Instead, things end right when you expect them to the most.

I also appreciate the fact that both Eric and Sam show their own unique set of strength and weaknesses. While both work together to achieve help one another in their quest. They are all courageous in different aspects and turn to each other when required.

This time it is Sarnoski who takes over the reins from Krasinski though both men wrote the story together. The 2021 movie Pig starring Nic Cage was directed by Sarnoski, so he adds some of that arthouse sensibility to the Day One. The cinematography is exceptional and the contrast of beauty with horror is quite effective in this much more vertical environment. It is comparatively not as terrifying as the first two films, but that is also partly a sign of the progression that comes after such superb opening acts. After it starts going though, it is quite excellent.

Similar to the past two parts, A Quiet Place: Day One is really a film that deserves to be seen in a theater because of how all the visuals, sounds and the scares can really be enhanced in that setting. In any case make sure not to miss it.
