In the early seventies, Pastor Doyle Clark pastor’s a church in Michigan. The Clark’s are a loving family with a lot of hope that God will provide for their basic needs. Pastor Clark has a vision of integrating four smaller churches into one bigger building and a congregation. But harboring someone’s backup plan gets its own challenges as pastor Clark finds himself looking for funding after a pastor from a different church pulls out.
Another complication comes to the scene when one of the contractors with a heart condition, Lloyd, suffers a heart attack. Instead of just funds, Pastor Doyle now has to figure out carpentry as well as find a decent provider to fill the shoes of Lloyd.
While all this is happening, a drunk in Detroit named Glenn Frank sits in a bar and plays his guitar. Unsurprisingly, he gets thrown out and put behind bars. When his sister retrieves him, she offers him a home that is also in the vicinity of Pastor Clark’s family. Even though Glenn has a lot of problems, he offers to help Pastor Clarke by being a carpenter. He is even able to do it for nothing since he is still being compensated for his previous position.
Touched by Glenn’s kindness, the Clarks decide to take in Glenn and show him God’s love through community and food. Glenn bonds with Pastor Clark’s eldest son, Lance, who loves the idea of playing the guitar more than anything else in the world.
Glenn tells the boy not to disclose his alcohol abuse, promising to teach the son how to play the guitar. Lance doesn’t like the idea of telling a lie to his Dad, but he is forced to do it.
Gradually, however, Glenn’s drinking problem gets worse. As more and more of his past haunts him, a number of them are not very pleasant. People turned questions of Clark and their relationships with Glenn in the town, especially when she sees him putting his life, and sometimes other people’s lives at risk.
Pastor Clark sees things differently and begins to lose faith, Lance, on the other hand, believes that God still has a plan for Glenn and his family and the church.
