The amiable Roy Rogers regarded “My Pal Trigger” as his favorite film. Rogers’s westerns are more stylish than the majority of them, I suppose. It is akin to Gene Autry’s The Strawberry Roan (1948), who lifted the theme of this film when he relocated from Republic to Columbia. It is directed by Frank McDonald, and his works are scripted by Jack Townley and John K. Butler from a Paul Gangling story. It narrates the story of how Rogers got to have Trigger, his famous horse.

Horse trader Roy Rogers pulls into the stylish Golden Horse Ranch that belongs to old man Gabby Kendrick (George ‘Gabby’ Hayes). Roy has not seen ranch hands Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers for two years and is pleased to reunite with them. He also meets Gabby’s daughter, the attractive horse rider Susan (Dale Evans) who is riding the champion stallion, palomino Golden Sovereign. Roy proposes to Gabby that he will provide his mare as a present if Gabby allows his stallion to sire his mare so that he can have a colt. Gabby brusquely kicks him out of his ranch. That night, rival rancher Scoville (Jack Holt) and his men try to rustle Sovereign, but he manages to escape and go to breed with Roy’s mare. Gabby the next morning requests Scoville to find the lost stallion, but the moment Scoville lays his eyes on the stallion he shoots him. Roy was encamped nearby, and when he heads over to the dead horse he is caught by the Kendricks, and all fingers are pointed towards him. Roy is jailed, and the crooked lawyer, Wallace (Al Bridge) bails him out but makes Roy sign over his horse.

Now the horse is in the possession of Scoville, who was the lawyer’s client. Roy manages to get someone to pay his fine out of the blue, and he is free from any further court orders. Scoville tells Roy that his mare gave birth to a colt called Trigger after meeting Sovereign that night. Roy accepts to train Scoville’s former horse, and Gabby gets tricked into putting his ranch on the line in a bet between Scoville’s horse and his Golden Empress. If Gabby’s ranch is lost, there is not only the ranch, but Gabby’s best horse. If Gabby wins, Scoville will not foreclose and will give Gabby Trigger and the mare instead. Roy has a lot on his plate because he is very upset with the particular stubborn Gabby. But the easy going Susan and Bob Nolan finally convince him to pull out of the race and get evidence that Scoville was the horse killer. All goes well; Gabby in an effort to apologize for the wrong accusation against Roy, gives him Trigger as a gift.
