Listen to this. King Odysseus together with his knights and Scribe Homer are returning to their home, Ithaca, when suddenly they are attacked by powerful creatures while hearing siren songs. They lose their boat and passengers, surviving only with five men. Odysseus, Eurylochus, Homer, Perimedes, and Christos wake up on the Isle of the Mists, where these creatures seem to live. On the island, they get attacked again, but this time, a siren rescues them from a certain demise. This siren used to live on a beautiful Island but is now trapped in one. The siren saves them in return for help to escape the Isle. In an attempt to form an alliance, she promises to help Odysseus and his men fight the creatures. However, Odysseus is not sure whether she is being honest. Once the alliance is formed, it seems impossible to keep those creatures at bay…

Arnold ‘Imhotep’ Vosloo got put under the spotlight after the hit television episode ‘The Mummy’. What is his story and where has he gone, now that it’s been revealed, has fallen under the hands of 101 Films.

Vasloo’s esteemed role as King Odysseus casts him in a favorable light, being decked in armour, leading a band of soldiers, winning battles at Troy, and even slaying a Cyclops. According to a Homeric scribe, this brilliant king ordered the victory and left the scribes stating ‘the Cyclops was killed!’ As strong as Vasloo appeared around the scribes, he needed to address the orchestrated cunning once again. Odysseus’s mess, his men and him chained to a siren with a dreadful desire to leave The Island of Mists. But Lady Athena paid him a visit in his dreams. It was a critical moment and forced Odysseus to the conclusion that the call wasn’t as enticing as it seemed.

The movie is quite comatose having minimal activity let alone any plot. To make matters worse, Vosloo and the rest of them have done justice to their roles. It borrows some visuals from classic Greek mythology films like Jason and the Argonauts while lacking the polish of Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion magic. The giant winged creatures do resemble gargoyles that you would find in a vampire flick rather than anything close to the intended depiction. I distinctly believe that the use of stop-motion would render these fantastic creatures even more spectacular and there’s so much nostalgia to be cherishing.

The siren’s role is clear evidence of the film’s weaknesses. She is the villain of the story, but she does not appear as deadly as she is supposed to. I do not think there is a moment when Odysseus or his men seem in over their heads. This type of film needs to possess a great deal of peril in order to build suspense and engage the viewer, but it is sadly absent. ODYSSEUS: VOYAGE TO THE UNDERWORLD, which has a flimsy narrative, is not really the action-adventure movie that people expect it to be: Homer must have omitted this segment from his Odyssey because it was too excruciating a memory to relive. As a result, there are several gaps in the narrative.

There is no doubt that ODYSSEUS: VOYAGE TO THE UNDERWORLD had a persuasive concept. But a combination of defending and beefed-up script, a raised screenplay, and a relatively more powerful villain than we were given would have elevated it to the realms of contemporary Greek mythology B-movie classics. In its current state though, it has the potential of putting you to sleep.
