It is quite amazing that The Devastator is effortlessly engaging and entertaining as the one hour and nineteen minutes video manages to be of a reasonable length.
The sleepy little town of King’s Ransom, California, welcomes the Vietnam vet Deacon Deke Porter. Upon arrival, he investigates the suspicious demise of his buddy Marcus Dearing from ‘Nam. However, the town seems to be in the notorious hands of John Carey Hardestern, a redneck pot grower and the sheriff’s (Kaz Garas) boss. Deacon realizes that the town has no tolerance for outsiders and in retaliation, they start a war. Deke, fortunately, has an old ace up his sleeve. His former army friends Spence, who is a terrific electronics expert, and Ox, the goofy and obnoxious but tough punchfighter, is available to save the day.
Who’s destined to win – the disingenuous Jerusalem John Carey or the valiant Ox?
The character Deke, played by Hill, is rather boring and alone in his negative proportions, Somehow he manages to be a ladies man, sitting in a chair which is facing the wrong way and wearing his Members Only jacket while needing to “talk” to people. At least, it is nice that Jack S. Daniels, which is the greatest name by the way, is one American masterpiece that needs to be uncovered over and over! There ought to be more men like him, both in the real world and in films.
In this particular case, The Devastator goes the opposite direction and shows evil pot growers instead of the evil cocaine-related villains most movies in this time were focusing on. The main villain has a very funny name, John Carey. When you hear it in the movie, you imagine the windsurfing failed presidential candidate tossing HIS Vietnam medals over the fence. Where are the swift boat veterans for the truth when you need them?
Cirio ncch, a prolific fan-favorite is the director of The Devastator. It is similar to the classical Final Mission which was made in 1984. It even has the same extravagant, death decapitation. One of the strongest aspects of the movie is that it has a double-revenge plot where Deke seeks revenge for his fallen buddy and himself.
‘You gotta love em’. Those are the words you can associate with the great MGM\UA big boxes in which The Devastator VHS was released in America. Big boxes are for traitors of this great nation.
