Laura, a young waitress at a cafe, aspires to have a piano one day. One day Laura meets a drunken old man named Sampson who tells her gripping stories of a ship that sank with millions of dollars in gold. Laura’s boyfriend, Chris Barnes, warns her that Sampson is a fraud and is not to be trusted but she doesn’t believe him. While talking to Sampson, she learns intriguing things about him. Laura takes Sampson to a library and surprisingly, she finds a newspaper article that validates Sampsons stories.

Is the picture quality of a DVD reflective of the quality of the movie itself? This question has troubled me, the most, while watching Wet Gold, a 1984 TV movie which attempts to replicate what The Deep did for underwater adventure movies, but fails to do so. I would love to say “spectacularly” but that kind of language tends to do a disservice to this film.

Anyways, the ‘picture quality’ as the DVD puts it is quite bad, but it does not pose a major threat. One major aspect of Wet Gold, which poses a considerable threat, is its steep descent into the soul crushing world of double-crossing characters who are very hard to care about. Brooke Shields makes an appearance as a waitress from Florida who demands for better. It is quite a shame that she is very lazy and self-centered. Burgess Meredith is showcased as a drunken seadog aware of the area where gold is submerged underwater deep in the ocean. Lastly, we have Thomas Byrd alongside Brian Kerwin who portray the strong deckhand and pirate respectively while, battling for the attention of Shields.

The four of them go out and dive into the ocean, where they find the treasure, but encounter a SHARK! And some pirates attack them too, which I thought would be interesting but turned out to be a nightmare. Largely, they indulge in skin diving, losing themselves in arguments over treasure spoils. To be honest, split wreck diving is rather dull. Although it can be a bit amusing when a character quite literally redefines the term “propellerhead” after a collision with the skull underside of a boat.

For some reason, there are few underwater action films, and fortunately my taste is very easy to please because Wet Gold is not one of them. The shipwreck diving scenes are decent but for propellerhead storytelling, it’s quite sad. If you want a thrill similar to that in The Deep or Into the Blue, check out Night of the Sharks or Shark instead. The movie clearly sank for a reason.
