LOVE JACKED is along the line of a romantic comedy road trip with likeable characters, family conflict and comedic antics. With charming characters, family drama, and humorous misadventures, this is sure to put a smile on your face. Yes, it is true that the description can be applied to many romantic comedies, but this does not mean we will be subjected to yet another mundane film. The recent CRAY RICH ASIANS also laid the groundwork, but it was a treat for people and it earned a lot of money. That film was wise enough to capitalize on Singapore, an ultramodern city that provided a much needed twist to the venerable genre. LOVE JACKED has got Cape Town’s South Africa to add some variation.
Maya has artistic ambitions which put her in stark contrast to her father Ed’s (Keith David) dreams; his daughter running a hardware store. A dutiful daughter is all he wants. When maya goes a step further into independence by deciding to travel to Africa, Ed is shocked. Looking for some inspiration, maya meets an African Casanova, Mtumbie (Demetrius Grosse), who romances her and she introduces him as her fiancé. When Maya’s father tries to convince her to forget about Africa and come home, she promises herself that she will marry Mtumbie. Unfortunately upon arriving, she finds him sleeping with another woman. Rather than coming clean to her family that her father was right, she decides to bury herself in telling them the wedding is on. Whilst trying to drown her sorrows at a diner, she meets a pool hustler, Malcolm (Shamier Anderson) who is being chased by his partner Tyrell (Lyriq Bent). To try and convince her family that she is still engaged, Maya comes up with a plan with Malcolm to solve both their problems. Malcolm will disguise himself as her African fiancé and hide from Tyrell.
Maya is ardent about loving Mtumbie and it is evident. Speaking in a Nigerian accent, Myumbie appears at the airport wearing a full African robe. Even Maya’s father seems to genuinely approve of him. Just as Mtumbie references the Eddie Murphy Joh Landis comedy COMING TO AMERICA in this film, it is worth mentioning that this was one of Murphy’s funniest films. This movie is a good piece of art.
This romance is full of hurdles as the scripts suggest. First of all, how is it possible that Mtumbie a badass pool hustler from Quebec is also on the run from a friend who he wronged and is now out to kill him? Mtumbie is also a Nigerian who has married into a Canadian family and has uncles who have an interest in all things African. The uncles, who have recently married, are starting to interrogate him about his roots and guess what? Maya’s cousin who is sexy and wild begins flirting with Mtumbie. Most Harlequin novels involve issues, but they always seem to get sorted out by the end for the couple to reconcile.
Somehow, this family which runs a hardware shop can afford an unbelievably magnificently huge mansion. But then again, movies are traditionally placed in lavishly decorated huge houses instead of small ones, whether they are believable or not.
Actor Demetrius Grosse is the highlight of this film for me since he is capable of easily switching from the gentile and noble lover to an African buffoon communicating fully in Nigerian dialect. He never fails to entertain, and it seems as if one could watch him for eternity. The other highlight is the father portrayed by Keith David, who is equally funny, and who always has a witty remark to share from the sidelines.
Romantic charm aside for the moment, there are indeed good moments and conversations in the movie. LOVED JACKED is a rather amusing light date film with some couples having other date plans in mind.
