With the help of the unique Russian enclave in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, these two unlikely detectives breathe new life into the construction of the film, “Taxman.” It has grown into a charmingly odd mystery movie that has the viewer wishing for more.
Alongside Roger Berger, who has a background in tax investigation, Avi Nesher wrote the film’s script. Nesher goes on to detail how ‘fellows who do not exactly behave in a socially acceptable manner’ are the protagonists of Taxmen. He elaborates that the novel also sheds light on the people who stand against the moral corruption of society: all the low-level workers scattered across the globe that have a semblance of justice and honor. He explains the struggle between seeking decency and the humor of good familial warmth while being surrounded by violence of guns and threats.
Joseph Romero (Wade Dominguez), an intelligent Russian-speaking cop, and Al Benjamin (Joe Pantoliano) a crazed New York state tax auditor, come together to tackle the issue of a grisly murder of a small gas company’s Brighton beach office.
The drive that Benjamin and Romero exhibit towards their work is nothing short of admirable. However, they are extremely problematic for their supervisors. Benjamin’s boss appreciates his diligence but regards it as energy sapping. Romero is of greater use to his superiors because of his language skills and ability to serve as a gopher. He is intelligent and willing to learn, but rather self-effacing about his poor marksmanship and driving.
But Benjamin, who has pursued the theory that he uncovered one of the insights before the murders about someone in the Brighton Beach Russian community engineering the tax fraud for gasoline, ultimately compromises and agrees to accept help from Romero that he so reluctantly sought after when they met at the death site.
In their misplaced yet continuing hopeless pursuit, they advance past the extensive corporate walls of deception and the dozens of Russian Gangster mercenaries and draw to a close the so called cabbage: the upper echelon Russian that has chosen to ally himself with an oil empire in America.
On the path to pursue this goal, Benjamin and Romero encounter a number of intriguing characters, including Andre Rubakov, a gas-station owner with a kind-hearted demeanor. They also meet his stunning daughter Nadia. To make things more interesting, they also come across an assistant US attorney, Peyton Cody, who with great reluctance takes on the case.
What happens between gas stations? Benjamin and Romero is a fascinating piece that begins in the off season Coney Island, which follows the emplaced Suicidal Chechen Hitmen going on a slaughter spree during the weak investigation. The struggled dancing at the Russian-Jewish wedding using Lord and Zabar’s remains a mystery for the audience considering how laughable but charming they were.
Avi Nesher directed ‘The Taxman’ with Roger Berger aiding in the writing process. Phaedra Cinema was responsible for the distribution while Kathy Jordan partnered with Nesher to create this work of art. His work has granted him the honor of being accompanied by an impressive cast which include Joe Pantoliano, Michael Chiklis, Robert Townsend, Wade Dominguez, and Elizabeth Berkley, along with other talented individuals. The movie encounters usage of strong language and violent actions so a rating of R was given, requiring a parent to accompany those under 17; violence is a strong language and strong language is used here.
In 104 minutes, the captivation is never lost, and needless to say it ends as well as all other pieces made by Roger Neill.
