John Trevor (Leslie Nielsen) was a participant in a secret drug-enhanced bodyguard program called Project: Kill. Although he was able to escape, he is still under the influence of the powerful mind control drugs and faces severe withdrawal symptoms that make romance with Lee Su (Nancy Kwan) and winning battles against corrupt law enforcement and drugged assassins very difficult. Trevor’s former employer placed a hit order for Trevor, and for a good reason. Trevor is dangerous because he knows things, less a witness and more a potential leaker of dark truths, and now that he has gone rogue and placed himself in the middle of this war, someone will eventually want him silenced. What he may become is just another victim of the program. Trevor only has two options left: die being an abandoned artifact or escape the clutches of his old boss and succeed in letting the world know about Sadistic Program.
Entertainment Value: That won’t be the one to be missed. Leslie Nielsen vs drugged-up cartels, police crossfire, and the attempted assassination of Brian Trevor. Exactly what was ordered. Indeed Trevor’s tale is remarkable and Project: Kill offers more than a shallow plot for discerning viewers. For starters, it boasts some downright silly sequences.
I can’t claim this to be underrated, but there is a bucketload of fun to be had here. The plot is quite messy and works in some inexplicable ways, which means some parts are wonderful and some are ridiculously exaggerated while a lot just seem boring and dragged out. I would’ve liked to have seen more of that since that’s where the fun is, but Project: Kill is all over the place in that regard, but again, there is a lot more madness here than anticipated. But if you’re looking for a serious thriller that actually works, you might leave disappointed, because that is not what Project: Kill is at. What you do get is plenty of silliness and Leslie Nielsen turned up to eleven as an action hero, so give it a shot.
When I read the synopsis, I had to check Project: Kill, but originally, I became interested in the film due to director William Girdler and main actor Leslie Nielsen. Looking through Girdler’s off the wall catalog of movies, I wanted to check another off the list, as this finally receive a boost to “must view” status with Nielsen as a drugged, action packed, mind controlled hero. And I was not disappointed, as Nielsen is just as outlandish and fun to watch as I expected. Each action scene is enjoyable, with low budget props, some explosions, and truly comical martial art showdowns displaying a very out of place but entertaining looking Nielsen. But that makes those scenes even more fun, as they’re so hokey and over the top, I couldn’t help but be entertained. Fans of cinema from the Philippines will appreciate the ever present Vic Diaz, who plays one of the villains. Nancy Kwan, Gary Lockwood and Vic Silayan are also in the cast.
