It would be unfair to describe ‘The Buddhist Fist’ as entirely devoid of merit because it does have a number of good points to recommend it, each one of them a nicely choreographed fight scene. It had the good fortune of having a plot (of sorts), but if you want to see some stunning stuff from the classic period then this one is a must see.
As has been said there are a couple of ‘item fu’ fight scenes that are planted at different points in the movie. So for people who are new to this phrase allow me to explain it as this is when the fighters are either using some bizarre object as a weapon like a chessboard or are fighting in a manner that involves the strange object such as a birdcage. When done right it can be likened to what a dance looks like, where the two combatants switch places and strikes get thrown. But what we have seen so far, and what we will get to later, they did an incredibly job here, however the songbird did appear to be a bit confused and out of sorts after being unceremoniously placed into and then out of the cage.
We are first introduced to Au Chang and Siu Ming during their childhood. Even at such a young age it is obvious the young monk has a bad streak; he steals a potato and hands it off to Au Chang! This seems to make a small mob of currently middle aged boys and girls that seem to be the children of the potato farmer set to beat the little thief.
Years later, the two have fully mastered their Kung Fu, but Au Chang is moving to the city to seek his fortune as a barber. Monks require an appropriate peer mentor, so Siu Ming is soon once again framed for murder – this time by an anonymous mastermind. It was astonishingly simple to get framed for murder before policing techniques were refined. A woman tricks the monk into drinking himself into oblivion, after which Chen Yang chokes her to death and dumps her body alongside Siu Ming.
As for the aspiring barber, he has his own problems: an uncontrollable shivering, which led to him losing a crucial contest. An awful misunderstanding resulted in Au Chang attacking a violent customer at a barbershop, only to end up in the middle of a brawl that wrecked the place. He is now unemployed along with the other barbers, and they are determined to travel to Au Chang’s village blaming the destruction of the shop on the owners.
