When Illegal made its mark in Voot Select, it was one of those shows that created a buzz since the Indian audience had slowly begun to appreciate courtroom series.
Vikram Bhatt is the creator of the show, so things looked even more hopeful. In his filmography, there, Kasoor, an Indian courtroom drama, deserves a special mention.
So it was expected that the audience’s attention would be drawn to this 10 episode series, with the episodes running for about 25 to 30 minutes in length, Illegal would keep eye balls on the screen.
The players are: A Junior Advocate (Neha Sharma), who believes in advocating for the most immoral yet true scenarios, a Senior Advocate (Piyush Mishra) who presides over a law firm and appears to be a more sophisticated Balwant Rai (Amrish Puri) from Damini, daughter-in-law of a rape victim (Aditi Tailang), the molester (Ankit Gupta) and his defender (Akshay Oberoi). Next, there is a sub plot of a condemned murderer (Kubra Sait).
This should make for an entertaining novel, and the first four to five episodes are quite gripping, since one tends to get Lost in the storyline. Is the victim of rape truthful?! Are the defenders of the accused or the accuser really playing fair with each other?!
Is the half truth in good faith, or is somewhere along the line deceit predominated? Is it human nature to overpower or is it outwitting in the game of power which eventually overshoots bidding? Is it the legislative heart of the law and the court or is it makes the law where justice rends justice?
In the demography constructed by Director Sahir Raza, there are numerous philosophical subtleties. Vikram Bhatt’s impact is also strongly evident. Filled with strong dialogues, gentle pauses, high decibel drama, words left speech to in the middle, and you get the anticipation of a truly great series in the making, which will erupt like a volcano when it is finally complete.
Unfortunately, the reality is different even with the efforts put forth by the cast members, especially Neha Sharma and Piyush Mishra. The much built over the years neha, is competent as a lawyer, who is smart, systems high heeled, and knows where to set limits when she meets either her ex love or Deepak Tijoro her father. Her poise, grace, and delivery of dialogue is in tandem with her beauty. Almost every scene contains a piece of Piyush that is fun to watch.
He possesses his characteristic restraint and, with an icy calm, emerges as the ruthless master planner of the events he chooses to engineer for himself and his legal practice, which he believes is his ‘dharma’. This cold calmness is evident as his relationship with his wife (Kitu Gidwani) reaches what is termed a dismal ‘dead’ end.
