I don’t know what I was anticipating from Adam Steigert’s most recent creation, The Horrific Evil Monsters, however it was definitely not this. Not that this is a wrong thing because after Fang and Ombis: Alien Invasion, I was not prepared for a rather cheerful mix between Men in Black, Suicide Squad and The Monster Squad. And if that sounds bizarre, you should wait to see it.
Conquest, played by Jennie Russo (Return to Splatter Farm, Kinga TNT) War, played by Jason John Beebe (Wrestle Massacre, Crossbreed) Famine, by Gregory Blair (Ugly Sweater Party, For Jennifer) and Death, by Michael Siros (A Grim Becoming) also known as The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, have made a decision that it is finally time to ride.
To stop them, a clandestine government organization led by Agent Mick (Christopher Bechtel, Gore), has assembled a team that includes Gore (Norman Queena, Dead Sea) a Leatherface style killer, alien Obj (Will Nami, Casting Couch Slaughter 2: The Second Coming), his action hero friend Alex Creed (Bishop Stevens, Girl on the Third Floor), a smart-mouthed zombie Anna (Kaylee Williams, Apocalypse, Black Creek), the Grim Reaper, Sean C. Sanders, who played the character of Grim Reaper along with Mrs. Unknown (Xia Orozco, Bigfoot’s Bride). William Sanders, in his final role, was portrayed by Michael O’Hara (Widow’s Point, Lyc animator). Michael O’Hara plays the character of Mrs. Unknown, while William Sanders is described as a Dr. Loomis figure.
Also keep an eye out for Dawna Lee Heisting (Bad President, Rattlers 2) in a cameo appearance in Alex’s culinary program. Joe Fished makes an appearance in a crowd shot (Occurrence at Mills Creek, A Wish For Giants).
Such an impressive cast for a low-budget film. The downside is that this means a lot of time is set aside to introduce all the characters, especially the heroes. In the case of The Horrific Evil Monsters, even the villains are quickly introduced and are allowed to engage in their villainous ways. This is achieved using both humor and menace, where a balance is struck.
I will admit that Adam and Kristin Steinert’s screenplay is not LOL funny, but there is enough wit in the scenes to make one smile. It makes fun of superhero and horror conventions and manages to remain humorous without crossing into parody. The Siegers deftly craft a more lighthearted script, which is exactly what the budget and the plot of The Horrific Evil Monsters calls for.
Being lightweight means there’s less need for expensive gore effects, even though we do have a few in the final battle. It also means the plot can more or less travel where it has to go without being overly concerned with logic. Not that this film, featuring the kind of characters it does, is going to be that much worried about realism in the first place, The Horrific Evil Monsters do.
Honestly, when the two sides finally do battle, I must confess it felt a little disappointing. It doesn’t take too long and the fight choreography is rather lacking. The Horrific Evil Monsters actually needed about another ten minutes longer than what they had, but fifteen minutes might have been better served. The entire film builds up this kind of dominance, and they are superior in every way. It really needed to deliver a bit more than the quick scuffle we get. It would have also helped to have a decent fight choreographer.
To say that The Horrific Evil Monsters does not amuse is an understatement. You meet two impressively chilling horsemen whose villainy would make Scorpion, Famine and his disconcerting appearance and traditions seem like a child’s play. Primarily, the good guys are bearable. While some of them might not reach the allegedly low expectations that had been set, they are at least usable. The conclusion hints a lot about the next edition, and if we are lucky enough for them to actually create it, then we hope they make the core group smaller or allow some additional screentime for the film.
