A single man with a military background sets out on a personal mission against terrorist militants who have taken his niece hostage during a soccer match.
When I first saw the advertisement for Final Score, I thought this looks exactly like Sudden Death. I then asked myself if someone was going to copy a movie, then this is a movie worthy to be copied.
It is veridical that after watching Final Score, I realized that it is practically the same movie as Sudden Death and has similar set pieces. To refresh my readers, do you recollect the superb scene with Van Damme when he is hovering from the lights in the Sudden Death? There is a parallel scene where Dave Bautista hovers from the stadium banner, furthermore, there is a fight scene from the kitchen where a deep fry fat is used, but unlike the Sudden Death, there was no mascot penguin beaten.
Despite its insulated set pieces, Final Score is an exquisite movie for all those who enjoy action-packed films. There is enough mayhem to let a person forget duty for a moment. I sincerely appreciate the action idols, especially Dautista as he accepts intriguing challenging roles, unlike The Rock. And now, let’s not forget to mention how impressive Bautista is at looking haunted, which is the perfect look for his character in this movie.
It starts off with a fierce assault and everything that follows doesn’t let up until the very end. There are several fight scenes and one of the highlights for me is Bautista versus Martyn Ford (Boyka Undisputed) who is now an even bigger name than he was when he started out.
Ray Stevenson plays the villain which he does fabulously like always, and this time I felt even a bit of respect for him because instead of trying to kill tons of people for shits and giggles like most villains, he had a political goal he was pursuing.
Pierce Brosnan doesn’t get much screen time, but when he’s on, he does add credibility and shows off a fairly decent Eastern European accent as well.
Bautista’s niece is pretty bothersome and in my opinion, I would have preferred to leave her with the terrorists and go to the nearest pub instead, so lucky me, I’m not an action star. There is a cowardly sidekick named Faisal who redeems himself by the end of the story and also brings the most comic relief of the entire film.
All in all, definitely Final Score is better than Skyscraper and although it might be a little too Close to Sudden Death, it is still an enjoyable ride with lots of R-rated action and present day Wrestling star Dave Bautista has already shown that he is physically capable of performing. At least worth a rental.
