The 1983 Italian film, Warrior of the Lost World, begins with a lengthy title card explaining how society collapsed due to radiation, disease, wars, and numerous bank bailouts. Imagine a world of the future. It is an exceedingly perilous one as the roads are ruled by ruthless scavengers. It is a world devoid of basic survival instincts where only the vicious live to breathe another dawn.

To put it bluntly, I will say that it was a really long title card and your typical person who knows me will tell you that I do not have that long of an attention span. I kind of zoned out after reading about the radiation and the diseases. The film occurs in the future and what is critical to understand is that it was produced after The Road Warrior was an international success. In the early 80s, the Italian film industry for some reason decided to stop making zombie movies and shifted to making films of people driving through cars in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Actually, my first impression of David Worth was that it is a name used by someone like Enzo Castellani or even Umberto Lenzi. In fact, David Worth is a cinematographer who worked on some Clint Eastwood films and so made his way to Italy to direct for the first time in Warrior of the Lost World. Worth later went on to make Kickboxer and several other movies.

One thing that captures the attention when watching these films is the fact that people were worried about the end of society long before 2023. It is comforting to be reminded that there has always been something worrying people, while every civilization continued to expand and prosper.

Robert Ginty stars as The Rider, a man so tough that he doesn’t even need a name. The Rider travels the country with his motorcycle. The Motorcycle speaks, but its screechy voice is enough to make anyone regret it. It warns The Rider whenever there is danger nearby. When punk rock outcasts try to attack the rider, the motorcycle identifies them as ‘dorks.’ When the Rider turns to see the woman he just saved from death, the motorcycle demands, “Kiss the girl” The Motorcycle has a quirky trait where it repeats everything three times. The rider sasses back, but Ginty always mumbles all of his lines with so much intensity that it becomes difficult to understand what he is fully saying.

It’s easy to get the impression that Robert Ginty could never quite accept that he was supposed to be having this friendly chat with a motorbike.

After colliding with a wall, the Rider gets assisted by elderly folks who are trapped in the world of futuristic technology and are seeking revenge against Prossor, the evil ruler of the State of Omega. Prossor has kept the Rebellion leader McWayne (Harrison Muller, Jr) captive. These elderly folks ask the Rider to go with Natasia (Persis Khambatta), the daughter of McWayne, to Prossor City. The Rider first children’s complaints in a childish manner, but ultimately goes with it anyway. The Rider goes through the trouble of helping out and trying to rescue McWayne while probably whining the entire time. While doing so, he ends up seizing McWayne leaving his complaining companion above Natasia lost which leads to the Rider needing to repeat the process with Natasia. Luckily, the dreaded Omega army ends up being incompetent and foolish leading to assists the Rider rather than acting as hurdles. The true concern lies within why it is so easy to play with Prosser’s intelligence.

More than a good movie, Warrior of the Lost World is an entertaining movie, loved more for the company you keep rather than the content in it. No matter how ridiculous the action and plotting are in the movie, you just can’t seem to take your eyes off the screen. The same goes for Robert Ginty, who seems infuriated throughout the movie. Did he read the script before leaving for Prossor? It’s very likely, seeing how annoyed he is. Williamson, though largely irrelevant in this and having a pointless cameo, here rants like a pro, but the icing on the cake is a ton of action involving Natasia and The Rider. Truly a masterpiece. If you thought Williamson’s rambling was something, you should see the 20-minute kiss with Natasia. If you can’t find the humor in Warrior of the Lost World, I must say you are missing out.
