The eyes of Terence Hill are the bluest in the West. They are even bluer than those of Paul Newman, or Hoppy’s for that matter. His face is the leanest in the West and even more so than that of John Phillip Law, which was already exceptionally lean. Terence Hill os also the fastest gunned fastest brother in the West is fiercely the meanest with the thinnest lips, and the dirtiest shirt. So, from the very start, we now when we sit down to watch “They Call Me Trinity” that we are in for something.
I have no idea why they refer to him as Trinity. In all likelihood, his proportions require muchmore than just the mere third of the deity. Regardless, this movie a satirical take on the nothern spaghetti Western from the 1960s. Actually, it is to spaghetti what spaghetti is to macaroni and cheese, which was a dish I have not wanted to eat since the meat rationing period of World War II.
Before proceeding, we should highlight that Terence Hill is actually called Mario Girotti and Bud Spencer, his on-screen partner goes by Carlo Pedersoli. Personally, I met Carlo two years ago on a dusty summer afternoon on a Western set outside Rome. As ‘Bud Spencer’ he was busy shooting for an Italian Western called ‘The Five Man Army’, but took off for two hours and devoured a plate of spaghetti, a chop, a salad, a bowl of soup, another chop and additional side of spaghetti, helped down by a liter or two of wine.
As Carlo said, “What I would very much like to do someday is create a comical version of these Westerns. I mean, we have produced so many Italian Westerns in Italy that it is now surely time to do a spoof. Especially since we do love the Western so much…”
It was two years ago and, probably, “They Call Me Trinity” is the answer to such a wish. I suppose all the people who did “Easy Rider” must have been involved in a load of cheapo bike pictures, hoping, for instance, that this was one of the low ones. There is The Legend that the original script of “Easy Rider” was, in fact, written during the lunchtime of the Hells Angels movies and I have a suspicion that “Trinity” is precisely the movie that Girotti and Pedersoli and all the other Italians formerly known as Hill & Spencer, etc, wished to do in revenge with the genre.
What other way would you describe the enchanting ending of “Trinity”? Spencer is a typical outlaw, just like Hill. Their next move is to try and save the Mormons from the nasty Maj. Harriman (who else, but Farley Granger?). However, they choose to get rid of their guns set an Italian Western first. Instead, they start pummeling the bad guys. Boasting a fight scene full of unique dimensions, makes it quite obvious that their entire fight sequence is truly reminiscent of the production number in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” where all of the lumberjacks jump off of the dance platform and the Laurel and Hardy short where there was a construction crew. There is a pattern of the Italian audience of Westerns howling at brutality. This time, it is hilariously entertaining.
