FBI Special Agent Travis is single-handedly tracking down a loose cannon serial killer, and attempting to meet that goal while working with a fresh out of training partner is not easy. As it happens, the murderer is an entire army of angry mercenaries working for the CIA ever since the Vietnam War. Unbelievably, this film is rated 27% on Rotten Tomatoes which is why I have no qualms about them not hiring me.
In my opinion, The Rage is in the top three ‘best of the worst’ Lorenzo Lamas films because it is pure insanity right from the first frame and, thanks to Gary Bussey, it doesn’t get any calmer from there. I must admit, I have never seen him quite so enduringly bonkers before.
Whenever I catch myself wondering what happened to the characters in the movie post credits, I realize that it is rooted from a real incident. It is safe to say that inspiration was drawn from the Waco and Ruby Ridge events, nonetheless, it needs to be reinforced that the movie is largely fictitious.
The car chases, shootouts, and massive explosions in this film are absolutely outrageous. This might be one of Lamas’ high budget films there are a few breathtaking stunts, especially the initial car chase. There are plenty of other action sequences, but no fight scenes until the last scene where Busey is on a speedboat, and the action is non stop.
Bussey plays a very rapey and sleazy villain who goes as far as assaulting Travis’s (Lamas) partner Kelly (Kristen Cloke) at the back of a van. He really does go completely over the top and this scene shows just how much of a cartoon villain he is.
Travis is one of the more serious characters of Lorenzo Lamas who usually has a bit of a twinkle in his eye. He is quite a jaded and cynical character. Even though Kelly is flirty with him, Travis brushes it off to focus on the nutcase band of Art Dacy (Busey).
In addition to Art Dacy, Travis and Kelly have to deal with an old enemy of Travis from the FBI. It comes in the form of Roy Scheider as John Taggart. He puts the blame on Travis for an operation gone wrong and, as always, he puts in a very impressive and detestable performance in which one can truly loathe him.
Although the score is at times completely out of place, I still think it is magnificent.
All things considered, The Rage is one of the most entertaining, if not the most entertaining movie from the career of Lorenzo Lamas and I have to confess I relish every minute of it. The action has reached head spinning levels and same goes for Gary Busey so this one is hilarious. Therefore, while you may be surprised, I do enjoy The Rage, so sue me and if you do not agree then I shall see you in court!
