The French film EAST-WEST beautifully discusses the ability of human beings to endure and resist even under trying, and almost impossible situations as in the case of Stalinistic Russian regime. While a doctor looks to return back to Soviet Union with hopes of helping conflict torn USSR, he realizes that for the sake of his family, he will have to let go of his principles and allow his loves ones to suffer in labor camps. When his wife’s efforts to escape fail, the doctor takes matters into his own hands and puts himself at risk to save his wife and son. This makes him understand that in order to pay for other’s freedom, you have to make a huge sacrifice.
The movie approximately revolves around the ‘performance and scenario’ rather than the storyline, which does in fact blend all into one coherent piece. The talents required to express emotions, and in between the lines, are remarkable! The severe truth of Stalinism is one with no action, however, East-West displays the burdened situation of the Golovine family with the bare minimum. There is some explicit language, as well as inappropriate content. EAST-WEST is an intricate piece that reveals raw human emotions like love, the will to survive, and the need for freedom. The film does not attempt to include Christianity as part of the solution, but it relatably emphasizes the strength of love and hope when overcoming tyranny.
Humanistic ethics of figuratively killing a person & being critical of oppression, all the while being subtly disparaging towards women, stems from beliefs that were not intensely negative towards Christians. With little to no swearing to speak of, women are regarded in the worst possible light during an interrogation situation. The negative side of taking an innocent life is avoided in one scene, along with two quick interrogation instances that feature a small amount of violence towards the woman. One affair is illustrated as well as intercourse with one woman, where the performing partner’s backside is shown naked for a few seconds. Some light nudity of the woman is exhibited, as well as the loose bra that she wears. Mild social drinking is showcased with some drinking of spirits and slight drunkenness. There are a few immoral relationships, including an openly known affair, a secret one, and dishonesty with planning to escape.
The film EAST-WEST profoundly tells the story of a young French-Russian family, which attempts to live in Stalin’s Russia. The movie focuses on the family’s functioning with the impractical desire of freedom and, at the same time, submission. EAST-WEST offers no easy answers allowing generation after generation to ponder over the questions such as how do we preserve hope whether surviving lies in the hands of our own ability or the abilities of others. Ultimately, hope inspires us to question how far we are willing to go. EAST-WEST operates unlike other movies looking at the human condition hoping to survive. Rather, it rests on the truth that hope enjoys lofty status that is separable from economy. Hope is something intangible.
Alexei Golovine, a doctor residing in France together with his young French spouse, Marie, and their son Serioja, chooses to return to the homeland and assist in rebuilding the nation after Stalin’s offer for every Russian emigres living in the West. Along with their younger French wife, Serioza, Alexei Golovine follows Serbian Menchikov and accepts Stalin’s offer. In an irrational fit of paranoia, however, Stalin views the return of emigres as espionage leading to Alexei’s family being the only ancestry group on the other side of his firing range. Once the Golovines reach their destination, they are either sent to a labor camp or are executed. Stoli is ruled over by a physician that must shift the reality of their life around, untangling Alexei’s daughter into a disillusioned world. Upon gaining the pretense of a model citizen, he saves his family from a certain fate. To continuously survive, Alexei reveals himself as a mighty servant to Mother Russia./
