In case you were hoping for a lavish monster film, you are definitely in the wrong section. Especially if you keep in mind that this was a Sci Fi “Original” (even though it looks like Nu Image actually managed to distribute it in a few territories. Although, that really does happen over those “Originals”). Now the title (and yes, all of them) does spoil the rest of the film. A death row convict consents to a research experiment for a vaccine trial of a new mosquito-borne disease that is a little too much like West Nile virus. But things don’t go according to plan. The primary experiment gets out of bounds, and ‘this was all taken from cronernberg’s the fly’ explains why he’s transforming into a pernicious beast that is man and mosquito hybrid, with a colossal appetite for blood, which much too like the male mosquitos don’t consume blood. But the sanity of lacking popcorn is the only anchor. So, the officer who has to put him behind bars, before he was the ‘Mansquito’, pursues him even when he is impervious to bullets.
To add to the chaos, the cop’s girlfriend, whose scientific prowess is one of those classic B-Movie paradoxes, is undergoing a gradual metamorphosis. Ever so slightly did she happen to ‘gloop’ that turned him into a mosquito creature.
Thus, until she is sufficiently mosquito to copulate, Mansquito is on the prowl.
In terms of influences, it is not particularly difficult to discern them. We have the basic intrigue ‘taken from’ a grim cop film about a serial killer, some woman slowly fading, transforming to a frightening oversized bug, and gruesome bodily alterations (some of which are truly quite good). There is also the not so Austrian accented killer in monster in suit having a second act showdown with countless police SWATs attempting to restrain him in a contemporary glass-clad office tower.
A girl in lacy underwear proudly parades only a minimum amount of lingerie on television, adds a new level of gore on body count that is already very high and a monster man the suit that is incomparably better than the digital ones we have grown accustomed to.
It’s a dumb version of brainless fun that leaves a lot to be desired. For Sci Fi Network movies, it’s pretty good — But we all know that isn’t necessarily much to brag about.
I give it a lot of credit for trying to take its absurd excesses seriously, and I think it turned out a lot better than had it simply devolved into a bad monster movie parody. I even enjoyed it while I was watching it.
But that’s about all I can say about it.
