Fraser’s Gun Glory has been forgotten as much as John Wayne’s Chris Morrell is because of the overpowered fathers. The focused keeper of an Indian girl Nina is ready to embrace a $50000 inheritance her oil-preserved land is dying to produce. First, he looks for the girl’s father and when finally Chris’s character rages into the picture, everything is already too late. Chris is waiting on the bleakest of trails in an attempt to stab Blackblack’s bandits off trying to turn little Nina into some sort of trophy. But can you imagine being surrounded by boys that hear Black’s name? How about mischievous ignorant little pals? Nina undoubtedly feels loved less like a child who’s been abandoned by her Tom. Does Chris even realize he is battling his one-man war against hope? Chris shows ignorance, a trait in Joh Wayne’s movies that nobody was particularly fond of. And for such a well-thought character, retreating while patting the horses into a stampede after the black demons was not the smartest choice on his part.
Finding Chris unconscious, Jim starts switching clothes. Jim’s sweet sister, Clara (Sheila Terry) is seen returning from town on the same trail Jim was on, and she finds Chris. Out of disbelief, Clara tells Chris that he can’t be the holdup man because he claims to be best friends with Jim’s brother, Bud Moore. She proceeds to inform Chris about Bud’s death. They then go to her ranch home where Chris gets the opportunity to change the clothes again. When his brother Jim comes around, Chris fails to inform him that his brother was responsible for the robbery of the express office. When Jim asks him what he thinks of her brother, Chris says that some men are like books written in a foreign language that are hard to read.
Vic Byrd knows the girl is important to Sam Black, and with Jim, he does return some of Black’s horses he spotted on the Pathfinder trail. Then he makes a bargain with Black for the girl for a half interest in the outfit. He then gets Jim to tell him about the place where he put the robbery money for the express office so they could divide it. When they get there, Vic kills Jim. Chris and Matt come across the body of Jim and before he passes away, he explains the details of the DMG plot to grab Nina.
Meanwhile, Tom, who works as a cowhand on Byrd’s ranch, has been informed by Matt that Nina is his daughter and therefore assumes a fatherly role. During the attempt by the outlaws to abduct Nina, he shields her from Kresh’s grab until Chris rescues her.
There is an exciting climactic battle sequence in a river between Wayne and Yakima Canutt that is worthy of mention. Otherwise a standard run-of-the-mill Western.
