Godzilla Raids Again kicks off with a plane in a submission crisis from a dire circumstance making an approach to land on an island close to Japan. One more plane touches down in the hope of assisting the first one. The two pilots are flabbergasted in a daze as they catch Godzilla in a deadlocked fight with some sort of armoured spiked lizard. The arms of the pilots are trying to undo their grips as they gaze at the 70 million dollar spending of Godzilla, now learning that the armoured dinosaur is an ankylosaurus named Anguirus. Godzilla and Anguirus are among the many prehistorical beasts which have made their way into the world, after being believed extinct and liberated free by prevailing nuclear arm testing. These creatures will now join the ranks of Godzilla and Australia in the utmost isolation of the aged isle, a Gordon-sized buck never found naked. There’s another Godzilla, now fighting with the Angurius on the giants’ hidden isle. But it’s evident without, however, that soon done in Japan, where Godzilla are on the loose, the troops of, though the people of Britain are still recuperating from the last attack.
Godzilla Raids Again is the first sequel of Gojira. It was released in Japan back in 1955 and later made its way to the US in 1959. In the sequel, a narrative is added to Godzilla’s plot. It actually explains as to how Godzilla survived his apparent demise in the first film. Well, it turns out there are multiple Godzillas. The one that previously rampaged through Tokyo was killed, but a second Godzilla is on the loose. The individual responsible for taking down the first one was unfortunately slain in the process. Even more unfortunate is that he did not manage to leave behind any notes explaining how he managed to accomplish such a feat.
Japan is under siege yet again, this time by a colossal beast, as cities roar from flames and innocent lives are lost. Godzilla appears to go through the motion of a monster with no intention other than a mindless wrecking ball, as this time he seems blissfully ignorant to humanity. Instead, his main focus is to pummel Angurius while the world around him disintegrates piece by piece. While the focus of the first Godzilla film revolves around the unshakable mental trauma that the citizens of Japan went through during the nuclear attacks on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Godzilla Raids Again shifts the attention to the aftermath where a smaller nation is attacked by two nuclear powers. In a bid to show dominion, both Angurius and Godzilla are so engrossed in demolishing each other, it becomes blatant that neither of them cares who suffers due to their childish brawls. While Godzilla’s Raids Again is not as dark as the horrific depiction from the first film, it is hands down sobered compared to the subsequent movies that come out after. While Godzilla Raids Again is not describable as powerful, it certainly has its moments.
The strongest part of the movie is how normal people react to being caught in the crossfire of a fight between two mega monsters. There are some who seem to find some pleasure, despite being ordered to stay indoors. While others choose to hide in fear, and believe in religion and science. A few try to escape from prison. But in the end it is the valiant people, who are ready to put their life on the line to save the world from the wrath of Godzilla.
When Godzilla Raids Again got to the United States, it was a heavily re-edited and poorly dubbed version. The film was retitled to Gigantis and, in the Americanized version, Godzilla was referred to as ‘Gigantis’. Apparently, the film’s distributor thought that audiences would stay away if they knew that this film was a sequel, despite Godzilla being a hit with American audiences. Since Godzilla died in the end of the first film, the distributor felt that these audiences would be rejecting the idea of the character coming back from death. Times certainly have changed.
