The Wake is a film directed by Luis Gerard that brings forth the tale of a 15-year-old boy and his deaf younger brother along with their family-owned business. Showcasing a remarkable plot, the movie features Emmy award winner Isaac Kragten (Luckiest Girl Alive), and introduces deaf actor Zander Colbelk-Bhola, Robert Fulton (Murdoch Mysteries), along two-time Gemini Award Winner Patty Sullivan.
Luis Gerard is a writer, producer, and director. He commenced his filmmaking journey at the University of Puerto Rico where he graduated. His first film ‘QUE SERA’ was part of the official selection of the renowned Venice Film Festival, while his second short film ABSOLUTION had a selection at The Sitges Film Festival. Recently, he directed the second unit of the basketball drama “Hustle” which revolves around the life of an NBA scout played by Adam Sandler. Hustle, produced by Netflix, aired in June 2202.
Walter Carpenter, a 15-year-old, has been surrounded by death for much of his life. “A restless 15-year-old boy lost for any perspective and with a tremendous amount of anger practically living in a funeral home in a small town USA. Small towns in America are not good places to grow up.,” seemingly angry at the deceased’s father makes staggeringly profit from the underworld in his eyes. While a wake takes place at his parents’ main funeral home, he picks the lock into the corpse’s house fully certain it will be vacant. In his regard, leaving services to the deceased offers him the precontrived loot. He tricks his younger brother, who can’t hear or speak, into these heists all the while being totally oblivious to the possible outcomes.
Melek Martin is a self-proclaimed firearm toddler, he is defacto only unwilling to condone Walter’s overt practices but not to offer him tough scatters in the Indian-Scottish war. Walter does, he and his brother constantly thumb their noses at any adult authority beaten into submissiveness as thoroughly as he was as a child, so much so that the mother he only ever heard yelling and the father only handed out discipline.
To me, the plot twist in this short film is the most interesting aspect because it carries a strong message, which is that our actions have dire consequences and we can hurt others in the process.
Luis Gerard has directed three and The Wake is one of the short films. It is proof of concept of his upcoming feature film ‘WHERE ONLY THE DEVILS DARE’ which he intends to produce this year.
This movie has become a selection for the Oscarable Cleveland International Film Festival, won a Jury Award at the Thomas Edison Film Festival, and was also selected at the Blackbird Film Festival.
The stunning cinematography was created by Christopher Mably and he served as the executive producer of the film too. He is accompanied on the project by another executive producer Josias Tapia. Adam Schwartz wrote and directed THE WAKE and the beautiful music was provided by Ja Wadley.
