Eddie is now able to access 100% of his brain. He can now use everything he has read, heard, or seen to recall memories. This new drug allows Eddie to become incredibly successful in the fast paced financial world. Everything seems perfect for Eddie. He gets back together with his girlfriend, Lindy, makes a big name for himself, and is living with overpriced extravagant things.

However, everything comes with disadvantages and Eddie is not as clever as he thinks he is. Just like other Class A drugs, NZT has manic highs, but terrible lows. One of these side effects is if the user stops ‘dropping’, they die. With Eddie having low amounts of drugs, this is an awkward situation. Eddie suffers from extreme paranoia, insomnia, and becomes delusional. The new drug transforms Eddie’s life, but at what cost. The further the drug takes its toll on Eddie, the closer Eddie is to death. At the end of the film, we see Eddie in a complete mess. Desperate not to get killed and willing to do outrageous things.

To begin with, one of the points my friend makes about the film ‘Limitless’ is the fact that it is much more intelligent than what the final product illustrates. Trying to look for something worthwhile that makes ‘Limitless’ worth watching, I came across this description which is surprisingly accurate since a good film showcases a well thought of screenplay, and for Limitless, big checks are ticked for style while the writing gets a few sarcastic not-so-good comments. Limitless is filled with plot holes and lacks substance like The Butterfly Effect (2004). The opening of the film set the table in a very unoriginal way, and so did the ending. The movie is dull and should ultimately be regarded as something one should not watch while digging into popcorn.

There are many parallels between the movie and the 2006 Z-list action film ‘Crank,’ such as its unique wit and pace. Additionally, just like ‘Crank,’ ‘Limitless’ is hyper intertextual as well, such as when a sub-par matrix (1999) crack was made a few years after its expiration date. But, this movie missed the mark. It was not only quirky enough, but also served too much on a poorly baked pan. This has been particularly disheartening considering Neil Burger is an excellent director whose portfolio contains the critically acclaimed and underrated The Illusionist (2006).

Along with all this negativity, it is true that most critics agree the performances were decent, albeit not breath taking: Cooper continues to do well in living up to his reputation as an emerging actor, and Abbie Cornish is a budding actress who will be seen shortly again in Snyder’s action fantasy Sucker Punch (2011), while Robert De Niro, for his part, continues to deliver another cameo performance that adds little value to an already sinking career.

Generally, one can say that Limitless develops into an incoherent collage and like the main character suffers from low serotonin levels by the end of the film. But I must say that it is not the worst movie in the world, that is for sure. In doing so, this film earns its distinction and credibility, never irksome but glaringly detailing a sinister frustration that gives rise to anger but does not evoke boredom. But if we limit the classification of this work as pure entertainment then I argue how inartistic that claim might be: Strictly Come Dancing is entertaining but mostly just awful. Doing my best to forget the movie, brace yourself because Limitless was, at the very least, ambitious. Next time, however, those responsible for the project seem to have to focus on keeping the limits that they have.
