In this day and age, there are plenty of movies released based on British gangster tales or revenge thrillers which makes it difficult to keep up with new releases or even attempt to figure out which movies are worth watching. It’s not an area of film I follow very closely, yet it seems like I get emails about a new film almost every week. Therefore, I have to say that I was not at all looking forward to watching Nothing Man. That said, the brief synopsis I read before watching the film did at least pique my interest in comparison to most others.
The synopsis describes an amnesiac homeless man searching for his best friend’s killer, even if it brings up several questions about his own life.
For quite a few segments of the film, they have attempted to not follow the trend of British gangster films, and that is commendable. There is plenty of the ‘tough guy’ mentality and one-dimensional characters but they do have an interesting twist to the story surrounding it all.
However, the biggest distinction between Nothing Man and other movies of its kind is the way the film looks. This is quite different from other films in the sense that the film’s unique look is partly due to its low budget. It has a lot of close-ups, some jerky camera movements, and other elements that enhance the rough texture of the film. When I recall the movie after it’s over, it has a strange impression that it was filmed in monochrome even though I know very well that the movie was shot in colors. The whole setting is very gloomy and somber. At some points, it has for a brief moment a Shane Meadows film feel but it also gives the impression that the circles of the director and cinematography are doing their utmost to produce anything but British.
The originality of the style of Nothing Man is one of the few things that I found appealing. The proceedings unfold at a slow tempo which does not change even during the action scenes. Here I might be a little harsh; it is supposed to be a character-driven and story-driven movie, but the reality is that the story is too weak to sustain interest. The acting, because quite frankly many of the actors are so inexperienced, is at best a mixed bag. Overall, the actors do not portray any sense of intensity in their scenes. The heroes are a little bland and the villains sure do not come off as tough, some of them are completely ridiculous. Especially in the last ten minutes of the film when the movie focuses on but the actors do. Of all the actors, I thought Ric Vince as Twink showed some natural charisma but he was not in the movie long enough.
There is too much disorganization in the script. The most enjoyable part of the film is its initial phases as it features actors engaging in conversations, and it is also the most entertaining. The latter half does not live up to the same expectations. The plot becomes unrealistic and the so-called twists are exceedingly predictable.
Some praise can be given to the undefeated cast and director, but there is ample room for improvement. In the end, Nothing Man fails to capture any gaze as it most certainly becomes a scooch more tolerable and nothing more than that.
