What’s this? Sarah T. Cohen, Amber Doig-Thorne, AND May Kelly together again in another Scott Jeffrey production? Count me intrigued… These three are Jeffrey’s best performers over the years, and he has “discovered” them all together in one film. OK, so it is a film written by Craig McLaren, whose scripts have not captured the magic of the 2021 Jagged Edge/Proportion Productions era, but one can hope, right?
Before we go any further, let me say this Alien Invasion is the one title that has made me roll my eyes the hardest.
Couldn’t you have thought of something a bit more discreet? However, after watching your production company’s other films like Snake Hotel and The Killing Tree, which directly describe what happens in the movie, I can understand why. In this particular invasion, a group of friends is celebrating the birthday of Lyra (Cohen) when they find a gigantic egg that contains an alien predator. So, Alien on Earth? By which I mean Alien 2: On Earth. The direct-to-video Italian film directed by Ciro Ippolito in 1980 is an unofficial sequel to Ridley Scott’s added classic. It features a girl on a beach who finds a blue rock pulsating with a creature inside.
Has anyone involved in this production watched 88 Film’s Blu-Ray transfer of Ciro Ippolito’s film recently? Because that film’s “egg” is certainly reminiscent of a pulsating blue-ish rock! Perhaps this explains why this film’s rubber-suited alien, Lacerta, is a bizarre reinterpretation of the Xenomorphs from Alien, isn’t it? Well, that was something Italian filmmakers did back in the day as well!
Let’s put it this way: in terms of story, there simply is none. An alien bursts out of an egg and goes on a rampage while the humans attempt to stay alive. And the best part? They STUPIDLY refuse to call the police! Why? Because one of the group is an AWOL from the army and the scientist who had the egg in the first place says while dying “Don’t let them have it.” I see. Any reason to not end the film early where the army could blow the alien to pieces? Instead, we get the same sequence of events of our band of friends running through the woods, their numbers slowly depleting. They even try to get help from a priest, the father of Amber Doig-Thorne’s Norma, and somehow manage to get him killed too!
Now, out of these, only Lyra, Norma, and the alien Lacerta are left. Yes, you guessed it.
There is no INVASION. Lacerta is not some kind of invader it is an animal that has gone rogue and decided to murder most people it encounters on the loose. Until of course Norma, the harmlessly meek and religious member of the group, decides she has had it and yells “Get away from her you b*tch” while completely parroting the famous quote from Aliens. However, Norma never actually gets to do anything because a light shoots down from the sky and cuts to Richard Kovacs’ Micha, the scientist who started all this, as he on video recordings that have been mixed into the back half of the film, bluntly states “we are not alone in this universe, and there are probably more of them out there.” Which suggest an endless sea of possibilities. But none that we see, despite the misleading title and cover.
Jeffrey and co. have created a slew of entertaining films for a small budget, but Alien Invasion is bland and boring and ineptly utilizes the dramatic potential of the three lead actors I was thrilled to see sharing the screen and most devastatingly, disgustingly, wastes the audience’s time. A low point for Jagged Edge/Proportion Productions I think.
