Just like every genre of storytelling, horror has its share of subcategories, some of which are horrific. If a horror movie does well at the box office, you can rest assured that there will be hundreds of knockoff versions available. I am from the 80s but would give a lot to have been born in the late 60s so I could enjoy ’70s drive-ins. Monstrous, science fiction and most of all drive-in b movies are my childhood’s fondest memories.
Like most things in life, this was the golden age of bigfoot flicks where many classic Sasquatch movies were released. Their success spawned so many more horrible films that it is far too well known for the truly abysmal costumes and cheap, pathetic effects that came pouring forth. The same goes today with several bigfoot movies of poor quality being produced every year. Recently, I was in charge of reviewing the 2017 Bigfoot movie Bigfoot Country. My sources told me that Bigfoot hunters do exist, and I might be able to meet some of them if I am lucky. Since I was not familiar with it, I was more than happy.
The movie centers on four people in their twenties who decide to go camping in the woods. They stop for lunch and are cautioned against camping in the woods but do so anyway. Their camp is set up, they find themselves being hunted by a hairy thing in the woods. One of them has a gun and shoots at the thing but this just angers it even more. They split up and begin to run but that proves to be a mistake, they regroup only to learn that the woods are full of hairy things that want to eat them.
I especially hate reviewing a movie unfavorably, especially if it has previously been sent to me, but I do not wish to sugarcoat the truth. Bigfoot Country has been a tricky movie to get through. While it is commendable to find challenges in any aspect of life, this movie took that challenge above and beyond.
Sometimes the acting in this made me laugh on numerous occasions, even though I am pretty sure I was not supposed to laugh. Many of the more skeptical scenes lose their impact because the actors seem to be overacting. A few of the more serious scenes lose their intensity and effectiveness because the actors seem to be going above and beyond. Realistically I do believe that some direction should have been given to the cast.
Snowbound is a story for this one that we have seen so many times, especially in the bigfoot subgenre. Most of these movies follow a group of people that go camping in the woods and are later attacked or stalked by bigfoot, and we spend most of the movie watching them attempt to escape the woods. Nothing new here. Unfortunately, the film tries its best but fails to come up with anything and we are left without characters where you want to try to flee the bigfoot that for the most part, you scarcely see. You can tell the team was trying to be lazy and quickly finish a film to sell for money instead of putting any effort into it.
Unfortunately, if you are looking for blood and guts then this isn’t the movie for you. There is some bloodshed but most of the death happens offscreen, and the gore that we do see is very little. All in all, Bigfoot Country was pretty boring to watch. While I do try to find something good in every movie, there is just this one that is so badly made and hastily put together that I couldn’t find anything appealing. This movie is available for fans of crypto, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else.
