This role he plays as Electric Apricot drummer and Lapdog ‘Lapdog’ Miclovich is a pretentious egotist who has a very low-octave voice. He likes to think of himself as an obnoxiously opinionated being. Helmer Claypool is the franchise owner and the lead vocals alongside the bass for Primus (when not slum with his Flying Frog Brigade jam band).
Other members of the group include Claypool’s long-time mates: Adam Gates on base as ‘Steve Aiwass’ Trouzdale; Kehoe Bryan on guitar as ‘Steve Gordo’ Gordan; Jonathan Korty on keyboard as ‘Herschel Tambor’ Brillstein.
The comedy group cameos Seth Green and Matt Stone complete the cast in this picture alongside additional appearances by the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir, Phish’s Mike Gordon, and Government Mule’s Warren Hynes.
With blissful indifference towards window dressing, the picture follows the band bio layout to the letter and thus the audience sees the recording session and the long awaited performance at ‘Festeroo’. Having shown all of the band’s early modest roots outside of coffee shops, the routine ego recording mixing session, and the dream come true performance at ‘Festeroo’.
While they are indeed self-important, Electric Apricot is funny on Electric Apricot on occasion. This phrase “I felt like Waterloo’s Hitler” was astonishing; mind-blowing. The evolution in the name of the group might not be the most unfunny thing around, but Lapdog explaining how the band’s logo resembles the Grateful Dead’s lightning bolt is definitely a story worth sharing.
This Spinal Tap-style mockumentary follows fictional jam-band Electric Apricot, formerly known as Electric Knectarine, until the name was changed because people kept pronouncing the silent K. The band comprises drummer Lapdog (Claypool), who takes 10 hours to set up his kit; bassist Aiwass AKA Steve (Adam Gates), whose various dietary requirements mean that all he can eat at festivals is wheatgrass and cinnamon-covered rocks; keyboardist Herschel (Jonathan Korty), a yoga enthusiast prone to fits of road rage; and guitarist Gordo (Bryan Kehoe), whose most prized possession is a tortilla that looks like Jerry Garcia.
Electric Apricot is certainly not one to miss for devoted fans, plus this particular joke just makes it even better. How many Deadheads does it take to change a lightbulb? None, they simply wait for it to burn out, and follow it around for 30 long years. With cameos from Dead’s Bob Weir, Phish’s Mike Gordon, and South Park’s Matt Stone, who playfully adds that Pimas is the one responsible for the South Park theme.
