As they aim to revive some of the well-known rivalry, Hunt and Lauda’s sons go against each other in the hopes of celebrating the epic duel that took place in the 1976 Championship between their fathers.
The first person who decided to recreate this piece of racing history was the Team Principal Joseph Thomas after he watched ‘Rush’, the movie directed by Ron Howard that depicted the already legendary title race of the 76 F1 Championship.
But this time, it is not James Hunt going toe to toe against Niki Lauda. Rather, it is their children Freddie and Mathias, who happen to be ardent race car drivers themselves, although it would be fair to say that they are not on the same tier as their fathers. In terms of experience Mathias does have the edge over Freddie, but the latter, who happens to be highly competitive, is not willing to let go of the opportunity to prove himself particularly because this showdown is filmed.
The famous documentary, on Hunt’s and Lauda’s rivalry, is incredibly moving, especially the parts in which emotional responses of Freddie are captured. He had lost his father years ago and the montage does well in displaying the interviews with each son on how they got acquainted with racing and along with reminiscences from their childhood.
In terms of personality traits, James Hunt and Niki Lauda were poles apart, as will be compared for the two sons in question. One of them was flamboyant, reckless and was associated with the term “Hunt the shunt”, the other was disciplined,organized and focused while winning 3 world championships, Niki Lauda. It is fair to say Mathias Lauda is at a calmer place too, residing in Ibiza with his wife and kids. In contrast to him, his brother Freddie seems to have a more loose and wild character like his father. He is having trouble balancing himself and coming to terms with his father’s legacy in clash with his own desires.
Charlotte Fantelli did the directing and the combination of F1 archival footage deals brings a touch of heritage to the proceedings, which is always going to be hard for the drivers to compete here, which indeed, is not an obstruction to relish this very English motor racing event. This is recorded from the famous Donington race track, and there is more than meets the eye between these two men racing for enjoyment but also for family bragging rights.
