I, for one, am ready for it, and it’s finally that time of year. To kickstart the season, I just watched a really good movie, and I am going to tell you about Surrogate a little later. It’s a spooky, ghostly tale from Australia, and it checks all the boxes for a satisfying watch. So, sit back while I tell you what to expect from the movie and grab a hot cider or one of those pumpkin spice flavored things. the choice is yours.
Surrogate is the brainchild of writer Beth King and director David Willing. There is not a lot of information available, and getting too specific might beat the purpose of the synopsis. Although not built around an action-packed narrative, the film isn’t tedious. The film is a unique blend of The Changeling, The Ring, and many other ghost stories. It does not solely focus on grief or loss; it takes a look at the drastic measures a parent is willing to take in order to protect their child from an evil force.
The cast is definitely the highlight of the film. The child actresses Taysha Farrugia and Ellie Stewart deliver phenomenal performances that aid the film in achieving greatness. Frankly, it is a very pleasant surprise to watch children in a horror film actually act as opposed to loudly screaming. The supporting actresses, Kestie Morassi and Jane Badler, help further the narrative as the lead hero and the antagonist of the film. Their performances are extremely believable.
I wouldn’t be doing justice to Mark Buys’s score, which heightens the suspense present in the film, further South of Heaven review.
Among the many elements that Surrogate excels at, its pacing and storytelling kept me glued to the screen. Don’t worry. There are effective jumps and bloody scenes, but they are kept to a minimum. There are unexpected twists and turns and some comic relief when it’s appropriate.
I was very impressed with Surrogate, it is one of the best horror movies I have seen in 2022 so far. If you would like to watch it, Surrogate is currently streaming on Amazon Prime for $1.99. Time to watch it, and I will await your impressions.
