The synopsis of Dead Drop, guarantees hard-boiled, crime-filled action, and while it indeed gives some good action, it constrainds to a scenerio where pacing is prioritised over display making it look quite uninteresting at moments. It’s about ex-CIA official Michael Shaughnessy (Luke Goss), who happens to be inside a moving plane. 3000 miles up Then his alleged best friend, Santiago (Nestor Carbonell), shoots him in the belly and shoves him out the door. It is now assumed that Michael is dead by the people he was working undercover for, however his superiors wish for him to return to action. And so he does, starting to pursue Santiago, but the tables have turned, now it is Michael who is the target.
Luke Goss is a fine actor. I remember him from his younger days whenhe used to sing with his twin brother in the group called Gloss (but that is for another conversation). He has, it must be said, done some terrible films, especially in the early parts of his career, and even more so now with some of the horrid Death Race spin-off straight to DVD junk that clutter the discount bins at gas stations and Wal-Mart. The last two respectable flicks I saw him in were Interview with a Hitman and Inside – both of which are cheap B-movies. I have never doubted that he is a capable actor and I’d love it if he got a shot to cross over to the good side because I am sure that he will deliver.
Goss has as company other two actors that are good enough performers and seem to start from low level works and easily crossover to high budget ones, starting with Cole Hauser as Dwight the Agency man. Hauser has acted in some great films and one of them is, in my opinion, Vin Diesel’s Pitch Black, where he performed as a drugged out bounty hunter transporting a prisoner from one planet to another. His screen time in Dead Drop is short, but his role is commendable. When it comes to brooding, Hauser can broode with the very best.
Nestor Carbonell has recently been seen as the sheriff in the superb Bates Motel, where his dark, intense looks came in handy. Here, we observe him as Michael’s nemesis friend Santiago and once again he is very convincing. His character and his performance were really commendable and helped me to enjoy the film but, as I have said, that was not the problem.
The movie was indeed engaging although the pace might have been bit too gradual. The jerky camera work during the chases was rather distracting and drew me away from the action instead of pulling me into it. I admit the overall effect was stylish and gritty, but I certainly did not enjoy the slow parts. I would recommend the movie only to the audience who aren’t impatient because it is a low budget indie action flick, but fans of illogical jumps and survival mechanisms would certainly enjoy it.
