The movie had its premier in London at the majestic Leicester Square which was followed by multiple screening across the UK. The movie attempts to appeal to a middle class rural audience who would be charmed by its undertone. The film wouldn’t strike fear into Spiderman or Batman, but it is a lovely movie that may appeal to international audiences. Aside from the UK, home entertainment seems to be the only viable option for the movie.
Guy Browning seems to be a more appealing character than the final product of the film. He is a writer from the heartwarming Oxford shire village who decided that the setting of the village will be perfect for the film. Roughly 400 villagers pitched in to make the film come to life. The entire cast and crew were housed with the townspeople, while the Women’s Institute funded the food. The makeup, costume, driving, and props were all taken care of by the villagers and Army was used to denote how many villagers helped.
One of the villagers playing a cameo in the movie is Ed Vaisey who is the local MP and the current minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
The heart of the movie centers around the painfully slow courtship between the Polish au pair Anya (Alice Zawadzki) and shy gardener Tom (Tom Mitchelson). While she is clerk for self-absorbed Harry (Tom Yates) who is looked after by parents living in the village’s manor house, he works on the lush landscaping of the estate. Toms friends try their hardest to uplift him and help express his feelings, as there is a budding romance between the two ready to set the village fair into full action.
Here you will not find any tortoises, the film’s title actually relates to Tom’s pursuit of Anya which is extremely painful to watch with how slowly he goes about it.
This village offers beautiful scenery and managed to capture some interesting scenes, albeit the story was quite weak. There are some embarrassing attempts to act with enthusiasm, for instance Alice Zawadski does pleasantly well in her portrayal of the confused Anya, who is trying to understand what makes Tom tick at such a slow pace. In the movie, Tom Mitchelson attempts to take on a Grant-like bumbling approach, but unfortunately does not have the charm that Grant does.
The movie is similar to an armature theatricals trying to do a rom-com of The Archers and while it was most likely exciting to film and for people to see their work on a big screen, it offers little to those not familiar with the circumstances.
