I have always loved every single FMV game by Wales Interactive and from what I know most of them fit in one of three categories. They are the Paranoia with a mystery type sub genre, action romance games with unrealistic characters which people date, and of course every single one has a fair share of terrible acting in it. I have not played many action FMV games so Mia and the Dragon Princess had me excited for its buddy action adventure setting.
An Indonesian pirate thaws out of ice in a ship and gets transported to modern day London for unknown reasons. The problem she faces is that she has no way to communicate with the locals, and she has some evil people who are out to get her. Not to mention the police aren’t too fond of her after she caused chaos during a buffet. Fortunately, the kind-hearted barmaid Mia comes to her rescue and she immediately begins coming up with ideas to help the pirate.
Mia’s job involves working in a bar called The Smuggler’s Den, which is based off a pirate setting, and it is not really at the top of the line. After she is forced to remove a clog made from a colossal piece of fecal matter, Mia discovers this mysterious treasure in the bin outside. As a compassionate person (and as someone who will never assist in any type of police work even in a video game), Mia shelters her inside the bar, feeds her, and attempts — despite the linguistic hurdles — to find more information about her. It doesn’t take long for the duo to become friendly with one another, and because of the choices you made, they end up having a positive impact in each other’s lives.
Mia and the Dragon Princess provides you with an array of adventures to experience as well as numerous diverging plotlines. The only thing you get to control is the choice of which option Mia will follow next. From deciding the approach you want to have towards a particular colleague to how to deal with a criminal armed with a weapon, each decision will have major effects.
The reality is that the setting at The Smuggler’s Den tends to suggest violence is imminent. This means that you will get to savor one of the amazing battle scenes which this FMV gem has in store. How these action sequences were crafted made my jaw drop, combining astonishing choreographed action with outlandishness that reminded me of my favorite Jackie Chan family comedies. It’s just something I personally haven’t seen too often in the FMV niche, which is indeed a pleasant change.
